James was the son of Daniel Moyer. His mother was Helen or Clementine. He was a Contractor, moved buildings. He married Gertrude Decker according to, two of his daughter's marriage records. He died while at work by being crushed by a concession wall.

Sylvan Beach-James S. Moyer, 72, Canastota moving contractor was crushed to death yesterday when a heavy section of shooting gallery fell on him at Sylvan Beach. Arthur Walton, Sylvan Beach was assisting Moyer, escaped without injury by seconds when he was able to leap to safety as the section fell. Also uninjured was Alfred Johnson, Buffalo, owner of the shooting gallery who was helping to move the section. The gallery was being dismantled preparatory to shipment elsewhere. The section was being skidded to a truck on rollers. State Police from Oneida Barracks reported when it got beyond control and toppled. The Oneida City ambulance was summoned before it was known Moyer was dead. Coroner Thomas Cox of Rome permitted removal of the body to Canastota Funeral Home. Moyer was born at Lenox Basin Jan 2, 1871, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Moyer. The father was also in the moving business, with no job to big for the firm. The victim spent most of his life in Canastota. Mr. Moyer was a member of the Canastota Fire Department and Caanastota Lodge of Masons. Moyer is survived by his wife, Gertrude Moyer; three daughters Mrs. Inez Reed and Mrs. Jennie Maloney of Canastota and Mrs. Helen Beneck of Syracuse and by a son, James D. Moyer, Oneida.
