Biography

John, born about 1855 in Scotland, was the eldest child of James Moyes and Catharine Wilkie. [1] His family emigrated to Canada in the late 1860s, but by the Census of 1871, his father had died, leaving his mother with six children to support.[2] Ten years later, John was supporting the family by working as a merchant in Milton, Ontario.[3]

He married Eliza Dignan Smith in Toronto, Ontario, in 1885.[4]

In the Canada Census, 1901, they are recorded living in East York with their three daughters: Bessie, Lois and Isabel. John worked as a "manager."[5] He was the manager of the Metropolitan Railway in Toronto.[6]He was then president of the Ontario West Shore Railway Company, a line that was never completed between Goderich and Kincardine.[7][8]

He died in 1937 and was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.[9]
