Biography

Ann Moyle was the second wife of John Prideaux of St. Cadoc in Padstow, Cornwall. Her niece, also named Ann Moyle, married another John Prideaux, Sheriff of Cornwall. The confusion of the two Ann Moyles, combined with the false belief that John Prideaux of Padstow's first wife was the mother of his children (see below), has prevented researchers until now from identifying Ann Moyle as the mother of John Prideaux's children. It is known that Ann was the wife of John Prideaux as early as 1583, and died before 1603 (see below).

For a convenient comparison of the two Ann Moyles (aunt and niece) who married different men named John Prideaux, see this website, which is based on Cokayne's Complete Peerage.

The marriage of Ann Moyle (sister of Robert who was born in 1556) to John Prideaux is mentioned in Visitations of Cornwall, p. 334. See also Note 2 in the Moyle pedigree (page 151) in the 1620 Cornwall Visitation.

It has long been falsely thought, following R.L. Prideaux's 1989 Prideaux: A West Country Clan, that John Prideaux's first wife Dorothy Gifford was the mother of his children. However, proof that Dorothy Gifford, first wife of John Prideaux of Padstow, died childless ("ob. s.p.") can be found in the Gifford pedigree (page 127) in the 1620 Devon Visitation.

“By an indenture dated 15th August 25th Elizabeth (1583) Degory Powhele of Powhele granted to John Prideaux of Padstow Esq. John his son, and Anne his wife, and the survivor of them certain houses &c. in Padstow, and by a deed dated 24th May 1st James (1603), by which Degory Powhele of Treworgan conveyed to Nicholas Prideaux of Padstow, Esq., inter alia, the reversion of these houses, it appears that John Prideaux and John his son were still living, but that Anne, the wife of John Prideaux, was deceased."[1]

Descent from Magna Carta Surety Barons

Ann Moyle is descended, through the St. Aubyn, Grenville, Bonville and FitzRoger families, from Saher Quincy and William Malet, as well as the legendary William Marshal.

It would appear that Ann Moyle is also descended, through the St. Aubyn, Trenowith, Basset, Fleming, Geneville, and Lacy families, from Magna Carta surety barons Hugh Bigod and Roger Bigod, as well as Hugh's father-in-law William Marshal. The Fleming family also descends, through the Martin, Brienne, Tracy, and Braose families, from Magna Carta surety baron Richard de Clare
