Mr James Moyle who died at Jamestown on Jul 26, was one of the oldest and one of the most esteemed residents of the district. He was 88 years of age, having been born at Wendron, Cornwall, on February 28 1835.
He arrived in South Australia with his parents in the ship British Sovereign on Jul 15, 1847. They landed at Port Adelaide, and walked to Adelaide. After having lived in the city for some time the family proceeded to the Burra, where Mr. Moyle worked at the mines. He was also engaged in carting ore to Port Wakefield. During August 1853, his father died, and on October 1873 Mr. Moyle married Miss Helen Oakford, of Penwortham. With his brother, the late Mr. Walter Moyle he took up land near Jamestown, portion of which was laid out as the township of Moyletown and part of which is now Jamestown racecourse. Land was obtained at Hornsdale where Mr. James Moyle settled. After 34 years residence there he retired from farming and went to live in Jamestown, where he had purchased property. For several years Mr Moyle was a councillor in the Jamestown cooperation, and he took a keen interest in public affairs. He was a member of the Methodist Church and as office bearer at the time of his death, occupying the position of society steward. His wife died 12 months ago.
Both James and Helen Moyle were buried at Jamestown Cemetery. [6]
