Research Notes

Research From Margaret: Romuald Muchowicz was so much like a Jew that he was greeted by the Jewish community in Yiddish (Polish version of Hebrew), and one of my aunts was seated in the classroom with the Jewish students (in that time Jews were segregated from the rest). My grandpa died when I was about 4, but I remember him singing old, Polish songs to me when I was ill. I was lying in bed, and he used to walk around the room singing. He had been wounded in his leg (I must ask mom about the circumstances) and I pitied him and tried to support his leg with my hands. Like Karol, Romuald was non nonsense kind of man, very devoted to his work. Work and family were everything to him. Probably after his mother, Ludwika Bornholtz, he was very strict. He wouldn’t allow kisses, etc.  from his three daughters. However, his favorite daughter Maria, who knew and understood him best (later became a well known psychiatrist) kissed him and hugged him in spite of his protests knowing that deep in his heart he needed much love. Romulad had to cope with five women in the house (Ludwika was the fifth one) plus a female servant. It was not an easy task for him. The daughters sometimes conspired against him, as he was so strict. It seemed they loved Helena more, as although she had no education she had a lot of intuition in bringing them up, and was very charming, gay, full of life. My grandpa Romuald also invented a couple of improvements for which he received some extra money. He also won a medal of honor for some involvement in a patriotic affair. He died of cancer of a large intestine in 1953.
Romauld's mother, Ludwika Bornholtz about her son Karol Muchowicz. All the time she was waiting for even a very small message from him, even passed by someone. After having sent Karol abroad my dad, Romuald, was arrested. Romuald returned from prison having his back dark violet, so much was he beaten by his torturers instead of his brother Karol. My mom and granny were doing their best to save his life. But despite their efforts my weak dad caught tuberculosis. Gradually he became thinner, weaker, medicines did not work and doctors gave him only one month to live. He was then in sanatorium. My mom took him home and started treating him according to what country folk advised her, because they no longer had money for doctors. She dissolved a few fresh eggs with shells in the juice of a few lemons (shells were sources of calcium), drained/colandered the liquid, added some sugar or honey and gave it to dad three times a day (a glass small like vodka glass). The second "folk medicine" was aloes (flower), leaves were minced , mixed with a lot of honey and lemon juice - this medicine my dad drank also three times a day/a glass. The third medicine was minced raw liver - three times a day/one teaspoonful. After one month dad started to eat a little bit, his appetite slowly returned and after the next half year he "devoured". He could not wait for meals and that was that. The doctor who had given him only one month to live thought he saw a ghost.
