Biography

"When James Lincoln Mudd was seven years of age he migrated with his parents from KY to IL and in March 1839 they moved to Scotland Co, MO. James Lincoln Mudd lived in Scotland Co, MO from the time of his migration there until his death. It is said that he lived all his life on the same farm which was near Hitt, s small village near Memphis, MO.

There are to be found extracts beginning in June 1849 from the ledgers of Lincoln Mudd. Some of the items were: tar; ox yoke $1.00; salt .75 bu; whips two for .75; five yrds of calico .50; casanet $1.00 per yard; 7 lbs coffee $1.00; castor oil; vermifuge; two horse plow $9.00; pair women's shoes $1.37; ball of shoe thread .10; and three cakes of shaving soap .25.

On 11-16-1914 the 93rd birthday of Link Mudd was celebrated at the home of John Morris, the old Mudd homestead in Scotland Co, MO. Link Mudd, though confined to bed, was said to be in rare form and enjoyed the day in a royal manner. The celebration was an event long to be remembered by all the local citizens." Link was the son of Benjamin Edelen Mudd & Elizabeth Lincoln. He married Elizabeth Wiley on 27 April 1848 & they had 11 children. He married Mary Ellen Gristy on 2 January 1867 & they had 1 daughter. The Memphis Reveille in Scotland Co., MO, contained the following about James Lincoln Mudd: "James Lincoln Mudd of Scotland Co. was in the city the other day. He is a 2nd cousin of Abraham Lincoln. His face, head, mouth, cheekbones, & eyes are nearly duplicates of the President's as could be. He is over 6 feet tall, has long arms & long bony hands. He has Lincoln's walk, talk, & laugh, full of jokes & fun. He likes to sit on the woodpile & tell yarns. Charles Gristy, a relative, was with Mr. Mudd who was looking after some interests in the probate court."

According to FAG Member FindFamilyTrees, he was 6' 7" tall.
