Mr. F. Mudd, a well-known and highly esteemed resident of East Maitland, died last evening at his residence, Melbourne-street.
The cause of death was an affection of the heart and secondary typoid fever. The deceased was 50 years of ago, and a native of Paterson. He had lived in the Maitland district the greater portion of his life, following farming. He was a great cricket enthusiast, having taken keen interest in the different matches. For 19 years he was a sergcant in the East Maitland Volunteer Company, a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters, and of the East Maitland Volunteer Water Brigade. He leaves a wife, three sons, and one daughter to mourn their sad loss. The funeral is announced to take place to-morrow (Sunday) afternoon at half-past 3 o clock.
The funeral of the late Mr. Frank Mudd took place yesterday afternoon, and was very largely attended, the mournful cortege being over a mile long. A short and impressive service was held at the late Mr. Mudd's residence, firstly by the Ancient Order of Foresters, of which the deceased was a member, and then by the Rev. Mr. Smith.
The chief mourners were: Mrs. Mudd, Miss Ethel Mudd, Messrs. Frank, Spence, and Walter (sons), Messrs. Joe, Jack, and James (brothers), Mesdames G. Grill, D. Sim, and J. Pryke (sisters), Mesdames. J. Bradford, Elisha Bowden, A. Sweetman, A. Vercoe, I. Vercoe, and E. D. Bartlett (sisters-in-law), Messrs. Francis, John James, Thomas, Arthur, and Herbert Bartlett (brothers-in-law). Wreaths were sent by the military sergeants', officers, and comrades of D Company Infantry and B Company, West Maitland.
Included in the large number of mourners were brethren of the Foresters lodge, and a section of D Coy., (of which deceased was a sergeant), under the command of Sergeant Garnham, who came up from the Easter Encampment to attend the funeral of their comrade, and three of the Fourth Australian Light Horse, who formed a guard. The deceased was buried in the Methodist Cemetery at East Maitland, and over the grave a military salute was fired.
