Biography

Herman was born 16 May 1861 in Gilmanton, Belknap County, New Hampshire. He is the son of Levi Mudgett and Theodate Price. He was hanged 7 May 1896 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. [1]

Also known as Howard Henry Holmes, Mudgett was one of the most notorious serial killers in United States history.

Criminal Timeline

This timeline has been constructed following the investigation undertaken by Herman's great-grandson, Jeff Mudgett, and former CIA operative, Amarryllis Fox, as can be seen on "American Ripper".

  • Circa 1876 - 1879: Belknap county records show that a cluster of unusual deaths occurred during Herman's youth. Two of them were cousins, Mary & Olin Edward Mudgett. Mary died in 1879 but was not recorded in County records, Olin was only 4 years, 10 months of age and his death was recorded in 1876. Austin Bunker, and Nancy Robertson, both age 12 died of unknown causes, and George Foss, age 4, died of poisoning. These may have been among his first crimes.[2]
  • 1878: married Clara[3]
  • 1882, spring - Left his home town with his wife, Clara.
  • Summer 1882 - Summer 1884: Attended & graduated from University of Michigan medical school. this period, grave robbing was very common. Herman began using bodies for insurance fraud. Herman's classmates indicated that he may have been abusing Clara. She and her son returned to New Hampshire.
  • Winter 1885: Chicago. Working as a pharmacist for the Holtons, using the infamous "H. H. Holmes" moniker. The Holtons mysteriously disappeared, and Holmes took over the pharmacy.
  • Summer 1886: Purchased the property upon which his "Castle" would be built.
  • 1887: Married Myrta Belknap in Chicago, Illinois.
  • June 1888 - May 1889: After an extraordinary number of legal issues and transactions surrounding the purchase of his Chicago property and other legal matters, this time period is markably silent. During this time, Jack the Ripper was active in London, England. Could H. H. Holmes be Jack the Ripper?[4]
  • 1894: Married Georgiana Yoke in Denver, Colorado.

Georgiana Research

Interesting notes and thinking out loud re Georgiana - said to be the niece of Nelson Yoke, I believe her father was George Yoke b. 1852 in IN who was the son of Richardson Yoke b ~ 1815 in KY and Isabel Moore b ~ 1818 in KY. When she marries Holmes/Mudgett he is using he alias Henry M Howard.

Trying to trace what happens to her following the time he died, I find her in the 1941 Directory

I also find a Georgiana that is trying to claim a civil war pension for KY as a widow of Henry Howard in 1886 1889 - dates dont mesh with this Henry but might be of use later
