Caroline was born in Dodenau, Kreis Biedenkopf, Hessen Darmstadt, Deutschland with the last name of Müller (best American written translation being Miller). At the age of 18 she immigrated to the United States following her sister.
Just 3 short years after Caroline immigrated to the United States, she was again united. This time in marriage to Johann Jakob Rück. It was in 1873 that her husband, Jacob/John applied for a marriage license to marry Caroline Miller on the 10th of June in 1873. They were married two days later on the 12th of June in 1873.
In 1880 the Caroline is keeping house for her family of 5 children. Three of the children are hers with two being step children. Her family was enumerated on the 7th of June in 1880 as living within the city limits of Galion, Crawford County, Ohio. Her husband is listed as having the occupation of a car inspector. This would be referring to railroad cars. The census lists both sets of parents as being born in Hesse, Darmstadt, Deutschland. The census lists the following as members of the household as related to Caroline.
In 1889 John made application for his pension as an invalid. This was approved and he was issued a certificate. Then in 1897 Caroline made an application for a widow's pension and was issued a certificate. [1]
In 1900 the family was enumerated during the 23rd to the 26th of June. They are living at 702 Manheim Street in Galion, Ohio. Caroline is doing her best to provide a living for her young daughter. Her son Karl is not having a good year. He started to be sick and would later lose the battle with diabetes mellitus, he has a job with the Citizen's National Bank and is helping out along with his sister, Emma, who is a teacher. Theckla is attending school. Caroline is receiving the pension from her husband's service in the Civil War. Living around the corner on next door to them is her step-daughter, Amelia Ricker and her family living at 718 South Market Street in Galion, Ohio.
In 1910 Caroline is 57 years old and living at 311 South Market Street in Galion, Ohio. Her 14 year old daughter, Theckla is living at home. The census was taken on the 18th of April and Caroline is listed as having given birth to 5 children with 3 still living.
The year is now 1920 and Caroline is a 66 year old widow with Theckla being 24 years old. Theckla is attending school and Caroline does not have an occupation. The census was taken on the 2nd of January and both mother and daughter are living in Polk Township, Precinct B, with her mother still being listed as Head of Household. They are now residing at 130 West Atwood Street in Galion, Ohio which is listed as being owned. Caroline is listed as being a naturalized citizen having emigrated in 1870. This census requested the language spoken and both her and her husband are listed as German speaking. Since there is no occupation listed for either one, this would indicate that Jacob's/John's pension was sufficient to see to their needs.
Caroline's obituary appeared in the Galion Inquirer, Friday, 6 Nov 1925. She was a resident of Galion for many years. She passed away on 4 Nov 1925 after a short illness, at the house of her daughter Mrs. Henry J. Schultz of Ashland where she had been staying. The obituary also states she was the mother of Henry L Rick and Mrs. Adam Ricker (Amelia).
Caroline was the widow of Jacob Rick and the obituary states she was born in the village of Dodenau, Germany. We know this is correct as we have the Birth/Baptismal record and it states she was born in Hesse, Darmstadt, Deutschland. She was born on 22 Feb 1853 to Henry and Elizabeth (Hock) Müller.
At the age of 17, Caroline immigrated from Germany to the United States of America and thence to Galion. She is stated to have been a faithful member of the Peace Lutheran Church since her arrival. She holds the honor of being among the first to join the Frauenverein, holding office within it's ranks.
