Biography

Hans Mueller is of Swiss descent

Hans Mueller was named the father of Barbara Mueller and the husband of Elisabetha Lautenschlager in the christening records at Gachlingen, Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Here is a screenshot from the Schaffhausen Archives church baptismal book:

Barbara Muller "from Gachlingen" Baptismal Record

The name Hans Mueller translates to "John Miller." It was a very very common name in Gachlingen. In searching for the correct Hans Mueller, many difficulties arise. When seeking out the marriage of Hans Mueller and Elisabetha Lautenschlager, it is discovered that he is named "Johanns" in the marriage records of Gachlingen. "Johanns" Mueller was married to Elisabetha Lautenschlager on January 20, 1763 at Gachlingen, Schaffhausen, Switzerland.[1]

Johanns Muller and Elisabetha Lautenschlager

As you may have noted in the above original church book record, another man of the name Hans Mueller was married in the preceding month. This name was popular in the area.

The same marriage was also recorded in the church book at Neunkirch. Many of the early records of Gachlingen are duplicated in the Neunkirch church books.[2]

Marriage Recorded in Neunkirch

This baptismal record for Hans Mueller, the son of Ulrich Mueller and Anna Stamm, was chosen as the most likely candidate to be the correct husband of Elisabetha Lautenschlager and father of Barbara Mueller.[3] The baptism was recorded in both Gachlingen and Neunkirch.[4]

Hans Mueller Baptism

Because Hans Mueller and Elisabetha Lautenschlager named their first two children Ulrich and Anna, it is felt that the above baptism represents the man named "Johanns Mueller" who married Elisabetha Lautenschlager. There are several other Hans Muellers to choose from in the region. There is only one Johanns Mueller of the correct age. He was the son of Philip Mueller and Magdalena Vogeli. Due to the fact that Hans and Elisabetha (Lautenschlager) Mueller did not name any children Philip, the current thought is that Hans Mueller was the son of Ulrich and Anna (Stamm) Mueller. Two children of the name Hans Mueller were born to Ulrich and Anna. It is presumed that his elder brother of the same name died before he was born.

Hanss Muller and Elisabetha Lautenschlager had seven children. Unfortunately, only two of them survived to adulthood.

Anna Mueller lived just 4 days in 1765.
