Barbara was born in 1936, twin to Jacqueline. She was the daughter of Jack Mueller and Bess Beek. According to her mother (my grandmother,) one twin was stillborn, while the other died after a few hours. My grandmother asserted until the day she died that if the hospital had wrapped the twins in wet clothes and laid them between heated bricks the way the midwife who delivered my grandmother (a woman known as Miss Meta, for whom my grandmother was initially named,) the twins would have lived. (Incubators we’re not in common use for humans yet in 1936.) The hospital assumed she was a crazed, grief stricken mother and ignored her. [1]
