John Muir, a Scottish-born schoolmaster in Scarborough Township, Upper Canada (Ontario), and his wife Catherine McDiarmid were the parents of songwriter Alexander Muir.[1] The family emigrated to Upper Canada in 1833.[2] John died in 1865 and was buried at the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Scarborough.[3]

"John Muir had been a Dominie at a school in Crawfordjohn before taking up the new position in Skellyhill School near Lesmahagow. He was a robust man and accomplished at Quoits and was remebered as palying curling for a rink in Strathaven parish."
John Muir of Skelliehill and Catherine McDiarmid were booked for proclamation of banns 12th September 1829, married 19th September 1829. [5]
