Obituary

SUFFOLK – Gordon Joseph Muise, 57, left us much too soon on March 11, 2016. Gordon was a passionate man who lived life to the fullest while helping those around him. He touched lives both through his profession and through his loving nature.

Gordon was born in Massachusetts in 1958 to the late Lawrence Muise and the late Isabelle Muise. He joined the Coast Guard in 1979 where he rose to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9) of the Boatswain Mate Rating. Before moving laterally to the newly created position of Maritime Enforcement Specialist in 2008, Gordon had served as Boatswains Mate aboard numerous Coast Guard Cutters beginning with his first station aboard the 327’ USCG Duane. This first station was followed by 32 years of service with units in Maine, Massachusetts, Florida, Alabama, Virginia, and Washington DC.

Gordon’s desire to help others included participating in service organizations throughout his life. Like his father, Gordon, a life-long Catholic, belonged to the Knights of Columbus (Chincoteague). He also belonged to The American Legion Post 88 and the Chief Petty Officer Association – Tidewater Chapter.

This passionate man also had a need for speed. He loved racecars, white water rafting, roller coasters, and ice-skating. He embraced life to the fullest every day of his life. Always the older brother, Gordon was a source of love and adventure for his younger brothers, Marcel and Chris. They idolized their brother, following in his footsteps in many ways. Gordon was the pivotal reason for Marcel joining the Coast Guard. He was also much loved by his daughter, Danielle, his granddaughter, Christina, and his niece, Cherie, with whom he shared a close bond that was strengthened by her help and compassion over the last years of his life. Gordon was one of the lucky ones who met the love of his life, Ginny Raasch, herself a Senior Chief Yeoman in the Coast Guard. Gordon was at his best next to Ginny.

They married in 2010 in a snow-white wonderland right out of a Hollywood movie surrounded by family and friends. Their adventure hit a detour when Gordon was diagnosed with ALS in 2012. Their love and courage sustained them through the last years of Gordon’s life as he battled this devastating disease. Ginny was at his side throughout, strengthening and supporting him as he continued to embrace life in this new world with her passion, persistence, and devotion. Gordon leaves behind his wife Ginny Raasch; his daughter, Danielle C. Muise; three brothers, David Muise, Marcel Muise (Jessica), and Christopher Muise (Amy); granddaughter, Christina; stepmother, Treva Y. Muise; and nieces and nephews, Cherie, Heather, Alissa, Ben, Genevieve, River, and Liliana.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 16, at 1:30 PM in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk. Burial with military honors will follow in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 - 8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Walk for ALS Team Moose Peeps, DC/MD/VA Chapter. [1]
