Biography

Flag of Kentucky
Native Kentuckian (born, married, and died in Harrison County)

Little is known about William O. Mullen. His entry in the 1830 US census for Harrison County, Kentucky, shows 1male 20-30 (William), 1 female 15-20 (his wife Sarah), and 1 male under 5 (his probable eldest son Asa Newton Mullen).[1] He is possibly the son of Asa Mullen and Agnes Hill.[2] He was likely born in Harrison County, Kentucky.

William had married Sarah Fooks on 12 Sep 1828 in Harrison County. Benjamin F. Debruler was bondsman; Sarah had the written consent of her father Benjamin Fooks proven by B.F. Debruler and Jesse Fooks.[3][4] No return has been found to date.

William died about 1835 in Harrison County, Kentucky.[5] No record of his interment has been found. Given his relationships to the Fooks and Abdell families, it is likely that his is one of the many unmarked graves in the Abdell Cemetery.

Sarah (Fooks) Mullen had seven Mullen children prior to her second marriage to Thomas Prows on 5 Nov 1851.[6] Two of the first three lack documentation of their parentage, but are likely the children of William Mullen. Two of the last four are documented as William's children though all four were born after his death.

Children

  1. Asa Newton Mullen (1829-aft 1860) - Asa appears in the 1850 census with Sarah (Fooks) Mullen, age 21.[7] He married Mary Ann Whalen (probable daughter of Stephen B Whalen in 1850.[8] The couple sold property in Harrison County on 11 Jan 1860.[9] No later record of Asa has been found.
  2. Benjamin N. Mullen (1830-1865) - Benjamin appears in the 1850 census with Sarah (Fooks) Mullen, age 20.[7] He is identified as the son of William O. Mullen, deceased, in the will of George Abdell in 1840.[10] He married Nancy H. Juett in 1853.[11] He died in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama in 1865 while serving in the Union Army.[12]
  3. William Thomas Mullen (1834-1906)[13] - William appears in the 1850 census with Sarah (Fooks) Mullen, age 16.[7] He married Ellen Elizabeth Fitzwater in 1854.[14]

Other Children of Sarah (Fooks) Mullen

  1. Hannah Angeline Mullen (1839-1917)[15] - Hannah appears in the 1850 census with Sarah (Fooks) Mullen, age 12.[7] She married Ezekiel Turner, son of Richard Turner in 1858.[16] No Kentucky death certificate has yet been found for Hannah, though she should have one; it is possibly misindexed.
  2. Jordan Monroe Mullen (abt.1841-1918)[17] - Jordan's death certificate lists William as his father, though Jordan was born about 6 years after William's death. Jordan was in the 1850 census with Sarah (Fooks) Mullen, age 9.[7]
  3. George W. Mullen (1844-1928)[18] - George's death certificate lists William as his father, though George was born about 9 years after William's death. George was in the 1850 census with Sarah (Fooks) Mullen, age 7.[7] He married Sarah Elizabeth Daniel in 1867.[19]
  4. Uley or Olie T. Mullen (1849-1914)[20] - The death record for Oley T. Mullen lists Sarah Faukes as mother and appears to list Oley T. Mullen as father. No person has been found in Harrison County by that name of age to be his father; it appears to be an informant's error. Oley was in the 1850 census with Sarah (Fooks) Mullen, age 2.[7] Oley married Mary L.S. Whalen in 1866.[21]

Research Notes

  • Birth date of 1808 estimated on marriage and potential parents' marriage. By the 1830 census referenced, William's birth would be between 1800 and 1810.
