Biography

Edythe was the second daughter of Stephen Muller. She married Arthur Wakefield Carkeek at her father's residence in Blenheim on 2 December 1873. She was married by the Venerable Archdeacon Butt.

MRS E. CARKEEK The death of. the late Mrs E. Carkeek, whose funeral took place on Monday in the presence of a large number of old friends and early settlers, recalls the union of the families of two of New Zealand's pioneers (states the Blenheim "Express"). Mrs Carkeek, as already indicated, was a daughter of Dr. S. L; Muller, Blenheim's first resident magistrate, and came to New Zealand with her father in the ship Pekin, landing at Nelson in 1850. Dr.- Midler's wife died during the voyage and was buried at sea, but he subsequently married again, his second wife being Mrs Griffiths, who had accompanied the family' from England. Dr. Muller resided in Nelson for about seven years and when he moved to Blenheim to take up the office of magistrate his home in Nelson was taken over by the Hon. Captain Carkeek, who, after serving for many years on the coast of Australia as captain of the Revenue cutter Ranger, was Landing Waiter at Bay of Islands under Hobson's Administration in 1841 and was subsequently Provincial Treasurer of Wellington, Collector of Customs at Nelson and later a member of the Legislative Council. Very remarkably in later years Dr. Muller's daughter was married to Captain Carkeek's son, the late Mr A. W. Carkeek. With the exception of a few years subsequent to her marriage to the late Mr Carkeek, Mrs Carkeek spent the whole of her life in Blenheim, where she was always held a high esteem among a large circle of friends and acquaintances. There, is now only one survivor of the original family—Mrs R. McRae, who resides in Nelson. Mrs Carkeek leaves one daughter, Miss Carkeek; of Blenheim.[1]
