This record is also available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah (film#1906253) and the Greer County Probate Office at the County Courthouse in Mangum, Oklahoma. This document provides indirect evidence of the relationship between Celinda Armstrong and her daughter Mary A. (Armstrong) Mullins. The W.J. Source:S727 Letter. 14 Mar 1958 to Kathy Bray. Privately held by Bray. Author: Loy T. Lane (8179 North Druid St; Portland, Oregon) Text: Dear Kathleen, Your letter read, contents noted. You are interested in genealogy. I was too, many years ago. I contacted Maud to see if my mother had any old letters of Grandma Lane's in her old trunk, but unsuccessful. Now I am afraid I can't help you any. Only verbal reminiscing from parents. The Armstrongs came from East Tennessee crossing Miss. river on a flat boat, negros driving mules, lashing them, whips, the boss cursing them, saying "hurry up" to make the landing as big logs were coming down the river. Settled in MO, I think, thence to Texas, 4 miles out from Paris. 9 children John, Joe, Mat, Tom, Willie, Sarah, Annis (born 1845 my grand), Susan and Ollie. Sarah or Mary married Lafe Mullins. Later with 5 children started west in wagon. Went as far into Ariz or W. Texas, dry sand dunes, taken sick, parents died, the oldest child could remember Grandpa Armstrong in Texas where lived. Neighbors wrote back and Grandpa Armstrong went out there brought the children back and raised them. My father James Lane went to Texas from Ark, visited and met Johnny. (Annis married Zimri Lane 1865, went to Ark.) My father liked Johnny very mujch, talked about him often, wondering where he was. My father born Feb 11, 1867, Paris Texas. Uncle Joe visited in Ark once, he lived in Granite Okla. Children, Annis Lizzie, Jack. Annis was school teacher, lovely girls. Aunt Susan married Evans in Tallihani, Okla. two lovely girls, uncle Willie, Mat and Tom dead. John lived near Paris. Lafe Mullins was related to uncle Bennie Timberlick in Ark. This may not be accurate. You could write the county seat for information. Armstrongs are Irish, plenty temper, but staunch and firm with pride. Lanes were English, temper, staunch, firm and proud. Sorry, I can't help you more. Write Jack or family, Granite Oklahoma c/o P.M. Love to all, I am 71. Not very good. Loy Note: Grandma Lane is Annis Armstrong Lane; Armstrongs went from Tennessee to Arkansas, then to Missouri, then to Texas; Lafayette (Lafe) and Mary Mullins and five children were in Jones County, Texas in 1880 per the census; Grandpa Armstrong would be James Madison Armstrong, Annis Lane's father, who lived near Paris Texas; Johnny may be John E. Armstrong, Annis's brother;Armstrongs were actually Scots-Irish. Letter from Loy Lane, pg 1 Date: 14 Mar 1958 Letter from Loy Lane, pg 2 Date: 14 Mar 1958 Scrapbook: Y Type: PHOTO
Notes
Research:Don't know what happened to this family after 1880, with the exception of WillieJoe and John M. I've searched everything I can think of. There was an epidemic of smallpox in almost all areas of Texas and in Indian Territory fm Dec 1898 until at least Jan 1900 according to a NYT article, but no info on Jones County, itself. Looked for him in ancestry, using just Mullins and birth year with okla & texas as residence in 1900 census. No hits. Also checked Idaho and Oregon, since sons were there that year. Nothing
Lafe, Mary and their five children were last seen together in Jones County, Texas. According to relatives, Lafe and Mary "took sick and died." The oldest child was able to tell neighbors that his grandfather, James M. Armstrong, lived near Paris, Texas, whereupon the grandfather took the children back home with him and raised them.
Mullins-1824 was created by Jim Protz through the import of GED for WIKI.ged on Mar 14, 2014.
