Biography

Anna (Mummert) Burns has German Roots.

Anna Belle, the only child of Jacob Mummert and Savilla Baumgardner,[1] was born 7 November 1883 in Manheim Township, York, Pennsylvania.[2][1][3] She grew up in York County, where her father was a farmer. In 1900 they lived in North Codorus Township, York County, where the household included her parents Jacob (age 47) and Savilla (49), Annie (17) and two boarding farmhands: Frank McCay (38) and Pius Becker (26).[1] Savilla reported Annie was her only child.[1]

On 24 March 1901 in York County, she married John Edwin Burns,[4] probably the son of Henry D. Burns and Mary Lydia Schisler.[citation needed] They had five children:

  • Edna M. Burns (b. 1901;[5][6] m. ___ Cornell; d. 1974).[5]
  • Harry D. Burns (b. 25 October 1902;[7][8] m. B. Genevieve ____;[7] d. 2 December 1974).[7][8] Three children.
  • Charles Webster Burns (b, 26 January 1904;[9][10] m. Catherine Amspacher (two children; she d. 1930);[11] m. Irene May Bankert (five children);[12] d. 6 December 1993).[9][10]
  • Grace N Burns (b. 3 August 1908;[14] m. Emory P. Panebaker; d. 8 June 1973.[14] One son.
  • Alverta Louise Burns (b. 11 September 1910;[15] m. Paul Messies Bankert;[16] d. 19 August 1990).[15] Two daughterss.
  • Edith H. Burns (b. ~1919;[13][17] d. unknown).

In 1910 John E. (age 31) was a farm laborer in Hellam Township, York County, supporting Annie (26) and their five children: Edna M. (9), Henry D. (7), Charles W. (4), Annie M. (2) and Grace N. (8 months).[6]

The family moved to Penn Township, York County, before 1920.[13] There John E. (age 41) worked in a shoe factory and the household had grown to include, John and Annie Belle (37), Harry W. (18, laborer in cabinet works), Charles D. (16, laborer in cordage works), Annie B. (12), Grace (10), Alverta (8), John E., Jr. (5) and Edith (11 months).[13]

Her mother died 14 June 1924.[18] In 1930 the household in Hanover, York County, was composed of John E. (age 51, worker in shoe factory), Anna B. (47, cook in a hotel), John E., Jr. (16, waiter in a hotel), Edith H. (11) and Annie's widowed father Jacob F. Mummert (77).[17] Her father died 14 May 1931.[19]

Annie (age 56) and her husband (61) moved again before 1940, when they are found in Union Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania.[20] John has retired and Annie did housework for a private family.[20] He died 2 August 1946.[21]

Anna Belle died 22 January 1964 in Hanover[3] and was buried at Dubs Cemetery in Marburg, York, Pennsylvania.[2]
