Biography
Mattie (Mummert) Emlet has German Roots.
Harrietta Martha "Mattie" Mummert, daughter of Henry Mummert and Eliza Forney,[1] was born 6 October 1866 in Straban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania.[2] There she grew up on a substantial farm in a household that in 1870 included her parents Henry (age 45) and Eliza Mummert (47), Mattie (3), and her siblings Jacob Forney (16), Henry (13), Mary E. (11) and Nathaniel C. (8).[3]
After her mother's death in 1873,[4] her father remarried and moved the family to Butler, Adams County, before 1880.[5] Her stepmother, Hannah Agnes Haverstock, died 20 March 1880[citation needed] after giving birth to one son.[6] This left a household comprised of her father Henry Mummert (age 52, farmer), Herrit [sic] (13), and her siblings Henry (23, suffering from consumption), Mary (21), Nathaniel (18) and her half-brother John (5).[5]
On 31 January 1886 in Gettysburg, Adams County, Mattie married George Jacob Emlet,[1] son of Edward Emlet and Amanda Louisa Melhorn.[1] Together they had seven chidren:
George Edward Emlet (b. 10 December 1886;[7][2][8] m. Belle E Harman;[9] d. 28 June 1921).[8] Two sons.
Lawrence Emanuel Emlet (b. 25 April 1889;[10][11][2] m. Ruth Anna Minter;[12] d. 19 February 1971).[10][13] At least eight children.
Charles Francis Emlet (b. 16 February 1892;[2][14] d. 20 June 1909).[14]
Wirt Eugene Emlet (b. 26 September 1894;[15][16][17][2] m. Deisse Viola Bowers;[18] d. 21 January 1967).[17][19] Three children.
Bessie Mabel Emlet (b. 29 December 1899;[20][2] m. ___ Riley;[21] d. 12 September 1984).[20][22] At least three children.
Lillie Gertrude Emlet (b. 2 August 1903;[23] m. Lloyd Jacob Kemper[24] (four children); m. Hilary Ray Kennedy;[23] d. 11 June 1990).[23][25]
Harvey Franklin "Badger" Emlet (b. 27 November 1906;[26] m. Margaret Caroline "Peg" Jefferies;[27] d. 13 July 1971).[27] Three sons.
Mattie H. (age 34) and her husband (39, a farmer) settled in Reading Township, Adams County, where they lived in 1900 with their five children: George E. (14), Laurence E. (11), Charles F. (8), Wirt E. (6) and Bessie M. (1).[2] By 1910 they had moved to Straban Township.[28] The household grew to include Mattie H. (age 43) and Jacob G. (49, farmer), their children George E. (23, farmhand), Wirt (15, farmhand on home farm), Bessie (10), Lillie (6) and Harvey F. (3), and a maid.[28] Lawrence was a hired hand on a nearby farm.[28]
In 1920 the family resided in Tyrone, Adams County, including Jacob G. (age 59, farmer), Mattie (52), Bessie (20), Lillie (16) and Harvey (13).[29] Lawrence, his wife and four sons lived on the adjoining farm.[29]
