Biography

Jacob Mummert has German Roots.

Jacob, son of Jacob Mummert and Elizabeth Saltzgeber, was born 15 March 1865 in West Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania. In 1870, the family was still in West Manheim, where his father Jacob (age 39) cultivated the land to support his growing family, which now included his wife Elizabeth (37) and their children Jacob Henry (3), Annie Mary (14), Urias (11), Elenora "Ellen" (9), George S. (7), Saranda (6), Albert (4) and Elias (1).[1]

By 1880 the family had moved to Penn Township in York County. Residing together were Jacob B (age 50, farmer), Anna Elizabeth (49), Anna M. (23), Ellen (21), George (19, laborer), Saranda (18), Albert (16), Jacob H. (15), Elias (12), Amelia C. (10), Alice Rebecca (7) and Lovana E (this should beSavannah E.) (5).[2]

On 11 May 1890 in Paradise Township, York County, he married Matilda Altland,[3] daughter of Elias Altland and Anna Mary Becker.[3] They had seven children:

  • Jacob Peter (b. 29 June 1895;[14] m. Velma R. Walker (three children);[14] m. Hattie Irene Amspacher (three children);[15] d. 6 December 1935).[14]

In the ten years since their marriage, Jacob (age 36, a farmer) and his wife Matilda (39) had seven children—six of whom were still alive and living in Paradise Township in 1900.[23] The children included Alice Katherine (10), Charles Elmer (8), Freizer Urias (6), Jacob Peter (5), Elias James (4) and Alpheus Chauncey (1).[23] Matilda's mother Anna Mary Altland (66) also resided with them (she is listed as a brother-in-law, but marked as female.)[23]

By 1910 the family had relocated to Hamilton, Adams County, Pennsylvania, where Jacob (age 47) continued to cultivate the land with the help of his sons Charles E. (17) and Friezer J. (15).[24] Tilda (50) kept house and tended the other children: Allice K. (18), Jacob P. (13), Eli J. (11) and Alpheus J. (9).[24]

In 1920 Jacob H. (age 56) was still in Hamilton Township, but he was no longer a farmer.[25] He labored in a shirt factory to support his wife Matilda (59) and their motherless grandson Charles B (son of Charles Elmer, age 2).[25] Matilda died 14 April 1928.[26] It must have been especially sad for little Charles, who at age 11 had already lost a mother and grandmother.

On 27 March 1932 in Hanover, York County, Jacob remarried to Lucy Ann Meckley,[citation needed] daughter of Solomon Meckley and Julian Taylor.[27] It is likely that the 58-year-old Lucy had been married previously. In 1940 the couple is found living together in Hanover: Jacob H. (age 74, retired) and Lucy A. (65).[28]

Jacob Henry Mummert died 25 May 1944 in Hanover and was buried at Paradise Holtzschwamm Lutheran Church Cemetery in Thomasville, York County.[29] His wife survived him by only one year.[30]
