Biography

Charles Mummert has German Roots.

Charles, son of Samuel Mummert and Catharine Elisabeth Wildasin,[1] was born 17 October 1869 in Penn Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1] His parents had him baptized 26 April 1870 at St. Mathew's Lutheran Church in Hanover, York County. In 1880 his family continued to live in Penn Township.[2] Resident in the home were his parents Samuel (age 42, farmer) and Catherine (45), Charles (11), his siblings Adam Edward (21. laborer), Henry William (20. laborer), Michael (15), Daniel (14), Sarah (9), Lydia (7), Albert Hoover (5) and his half-brother Lewis (25. laborer).[2]

On 2 April 1893 in Hanover, he married Catharine Mary "Mary" Newman (Nauman),[3] daughter of Johannes Naumann and Mary Ann Goodfellow[3] and sister of Emmaline Elizabeth Nauman, who married Charles's brother Adam. Mary and Charles had three children:

  • Mary Catharine Mummert (b. 11 November 1893;[4][5] d. 18 December 1972).[5]
  • Clayton Ralph Mummert (b. 20 September 1897;[6][7] d. 4 October 1918 at age 21).[7]

The couple settled in Manheim Township, York County, where the household included Charles W. (age 31, farmer), his wife Catharine M. Mummert (27), and their children Mary C. (7), Clayton R. (3) and Annie R. (three months).[10]

Before 1910 the family including Charles W. (age 38, farmer) and his wife Mary (36), and their children Mary C. (16), Clayton R. (12) and Annie R. (10) had moved to Penn Township, York County.[11] Charles (age 47, creamery worker) moved with his wife Mary C. (45) and daughter Mary C. (26, department store saleslady) to Hanover, York County, before 1920.[12] The trio returned to Penn Township before 1930, when the household was comprised of Charles W. (age 56, woodworker in a furniture factory), Mary C. (56) and Mary C. (35, manager, stamp department).[13]

His wife died in 1938.[14] Charles died 7 October 1953 in Abbottstown, Adams County, Pennsylvania at the home of Edward Duncan,[15] and was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hanover.[16]
