Biography

Puritan Great Migration
Edmund Munnings immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for Essex, England.

Origin

Edmund was born about 1595 (aged 40 on 17 June 1635) perhaps at either Tillingham or Denge, Essex, adjacent communities. Anderson does not report parents, but reports that one of his children were born at Tillingham.[1]

A previous version of this profile claimed, citing only online trees, that he was son of Edmund Munnings and Sarah. No record of these parents has been found and they have been detached. Please use comments or G2G to discuss evidence for his origins.

In England

At Tillingham parish (where antinomian John Trask was active in the 1620s) Edmund Munnings served on the manorial court.[2]

Immigration

In 1635 "Edmund Man[n]ing" immigrated aboard the Abigail, aged 40 with his wife, "Mary Moning's" was aged 30, Mary Monning's aged 9, Anna Monning's aged 6, Michelaliell Mon[n]ing's" aged 3 [Hotten 92]. They resided in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay.[1]

Marriage

Edmund married twice.

  • He married by about 1626 Mary Herris, daughter of Edmund Herris, of Tillingham, Essex. Edmund Herris left a bequest to "my daughter Mary the wife of Edmund Munninges." After reviewing the baptism dates of their children, Anderson in "Great Migration" concludes that the Munnings family may have resided some place other than Essex between 1629 and 1635.[1]Mary became a member of he church on April 16, 1641.[2]She died by 1666.[3]
  • Edmund married by an unknown date Markiet (Unknown); she was named in his will dated October 2, 1666.[1]

Children

Children of Edmund and Sarah: [1]

  1. Mary Munnings was born about 1626, she was aged 9 on June 17, 1635. She sailed for New England in 1635 with her parents and siblings.
  2. Hannah/Anna Munnings was baptized at Tillingham, Essex on January 6, 1628/9 - she was 6 years old on June 17, 1635 when she migrated with her parents and siblings. m. about 1648 to Henry Garnsey. d. August 17, 1686.
  3. Rebecca Munnings b. about 1631; married at Boston on January 14, 1651/2 to Edmund Madocks. In 1635, upon her parents migration, she was age 4 years and left at Tillingham with her grandfather, Edward Herris. At some point, Rebecca joined her parents in New England.[2]
  4. Mahalaleel Munnings was born about 1632 since he was age 3 on June 17, 1635 when he migrated with her parents and siblings. He married by about 1655 to Hannah Wiswall, daughter of John Wiswall. His wife was administrator of his estate when he deceased, will dated July 9, 1687. He was a New England merchant, crossing the Atlantic at least five times. He drowned in the Boston mill creek.[2]
  5. Hopestill Munnings (male) was born at Dorchester on April 15, 1657 and was baptized at the same place on April 25, 1641 (annotated "went to England"). He married Sarah Smith of St. Lawrence at Tillingham, Essex on October 13, 1659. Married (2nd) Margaret _____ (surname unknown) by a date which is not known. He was identified as "my son" in the will of Richard Fouldger of St. Lawrence, Essex. He is probably the "Hope Munnings" in the will of Takeheed Munnings and was buried at Burnham, Essex on December 14, 1705.
  6. Return Munnings (male) was born at Dorchester on September 7, 1640 and baptized at the same place on April 25, 1641 (annotated "went to Boston"). He married Sarah Hobart at Hingham on December 9, 1664. Sarah was the daughter of minister Peter Hobart of Hingham.[2] He married (2nd) by 1689 to Martha _____ (surname unknown.)
  7. Takeheed Munnings (male) was born at Dorchester on October 20, 1642; baptized at the same place on January 22, 1642/3. He was seemingly living in England when he was named in his father's will on October 2, 1666. He was likely the testator of March 9, 1684/5, of St. Lawrence, Essex. He made his will on March 9, 1684/5 as "Takeheed Munnings of the parish of St. Lawrence in the County of Essex, yeoman," naming Richard Folger, Hope Munnings. Takeheed aparently had no children of his own and was guardian of Richard Folger and Hope Munnings.
  8. (probably) Repentance Munnings, buried at Tillingham, Essex in September 1660.

Positions and Property

Edmund was chosen on 6 January 1636/7 and 18 March 1637/8 as fenceviewer for Dorchester, Massachusetts.[1]

On 18 January 1635/6 Edmund and others were each allocated 8 acres at Squantum Neck in addition to their great lots on Roxbury bounds purchased from William Hulbert, John Hayden, and George Phillips [DTR 104-6].[1]

He did not become a member of the church at Dorchester, nor a Freeman. Return, Return, and Takeheed were baptized at Dorchester because of their mother's church membership.[2]

Return to England

He returned permanently to England after 1643[4] living in Tillimgham, or adjacent in Dengie.[1] Records for the town of Dorchester note that in December 1651 "Goodman Moninges desireth to have the land about his house recorded."

Moore in "Abandoning America" says he "probably left New England soon after this, if he had not gone already." "He returned to Dengie Hundred." Joseph Hills of Malden, in 1658, complained that he had paid Munnings L11 to send a bullock from England, but it didn't arrive.[2]

Death, Will, Legacy

While living at Denge, Edmund set his mark on his will, dated 2 October 1666 - in it he calls himself an "unprofitable servant of God." His son, Takeheed (as well as others) were witnesses, Hopestill was executor.[1] Edmund died about 1667 at Denge, Essex, England, aged 72 years.[5] He was buried on 12 Jul 1667 at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, Middlesex, England.[6]

His will was proved on 28 July 1667 at Denge, county Essex, England.[1] In it he left bequests to his wife "Markiet", his daughters Mary & Rebecca, his sons Return, Hopestill and Takeheed. His legacy to Return and Mary were to be distributed "within one year after demand be made" since they were both living in New England.[2]

I have finished researching and writing the biography for Edmund Munnings-21. I found no evidence for any parents - I believe Edmunings-22 and Sarah Unknown-455746 should be detached with notes left on the profiles.

Objection? Discussion?

Thanks for your work on this profile, Cheryl. Looks great.

I concur with detaching the parents. I'll add the typical notation to the narrative.

After waiting 3 days, and per Jillaine's "concur" comment, I have proceeded to detach Unknown-455746 and Munnings-22 as the parents of this profile, Munnings-21.

I added notes on -455746 & -22.

I see new parents have been added quite recently -

Edmund Munnings and Sarah (Unknown) Munnings. Looking at their profiles, the source is a meaningless "Ancestry Family Trees."

Additionally there much has been added to the bottom of the biography, that seems to be copy/paste and duplication of bio.

(edit) Also I see Anderson gives additional children, Hopestill, Return, Takeheed, Repentance.

Cynthia, do you have time available to fix/update this?

(edit) Cynthia, I see that in "Abandoning America" by Susan Hardman Moore, there is a sketch for Edmund and also one for his children Hopestill and Takehead. I'll try to scratch up enough time to update this profile as indicated in "AA". Will leave a comment for you when I'm finished... probably tomorrow.

Sarah Ardley is currently shown as both mother (Ardley-4) and wife (Ardley-3).

Anderson reports Edmund married 1) Mary Herris, 2) Markiet (Unknown).

No parents reported by Anderson.

Any sources for these alternate relationships? We follow Anderson on Puritan Great Migration profiles, unless there is newer info (since 1995). Please add sources. Thanks!
