Biography

Robert (Munro) Munro XXth of Foulis is a member of Clan Munro.

Robert was born circa 1595. He was a son of Hector Munro, 17th Baron and 19th Laird of Foulis.

On his father's death he succeeded as 18th Baron and 20th Laird of Foulis. However to his contemporaries and tenants he became known as the Black Baron. It is assumed he acquired the nickname due to the colour of his hair rather than to any ferocious aspect of his personality.

As a young laird, Robert came under the influence of the Sutherland family and became in engaged on the Sutherland side in an ongoing dispute with the Sinclair, Earl of Caithness. It is therefore of little surprise that on 24th November 1610 he married Margaret Sutherland daughter of the Laird of Duffus.

Like many Munro men, he followed the path to mainland Europe and a military career fighting in foreign wars. Like his "more famous" cousin Robert Munro of Obsdale, he served with distinction in the Swedish army of Gustavus Adolphus, and he was in command of his own regiment. It was while on military service in Germany that he was wounded and ultimately died.

Children

Robert Munro had the following children:[1][2]
  • By his first wife, Margaret Sutherland, he had one daughter named Margaret.
  • By his second wife, Mary Haynes, he had one daughter named Elizabeth.
Robert left no male issue and he was succeeded in the Barony of Foulis by his brother Hector Munro.[1]

Clan Munro USA disputes William Munroe as a son of this person. They list William Munroe's parents as unknown based on their sources and a conflicting Y-DNA result. See:

The objections Clan Munro raises should be addressed within this profile somehow.

Munroe-23 and Munro-482 do not represent the same person because: Merge needs to be reversed. The Higher LNAB needs to be merged into the Lower LNAB.

Munroe-23 and Munro-482 appear to represent the same person because: I am hoping that Munro-482 and Munroe-23 can be merged, because they are the same person, with the exception that Monroe should be Munro as surname.

Munro-1963 and Munroe-23 appear to represent the same person because: same death date and site

Munro-482 and Munro-2316 do not represent the same person because: The merge needs to be reversed. We merge larger LNAB into the liwer LNAB.
