Biography

Duncan was born September 11, 1806 in North Carolina. His parents were Malcolm Munroe and Margaret Black.

He married Sarah Phoeby Phillips in about 1837 in North Carolina. They had three children: Benjamin Overton Munroe, Phoeby Ann Munroe, and Sarah E. Munroe.

After Phoeby died, he married her sister, Elizabeth Phillips. They had seven children: Margaret C.Munroe, Mary Mollie Munroe, William K. Munroe, Cornelius "Neill" Munroe, Eliza Ann Munroe, Martha Jane Munroe, and John Malcolm Munroe.

On January 10, 1859, Duncan Munroe accepted guardianship of William C. Barry and Judson Barry after the death of their father, Walton Barry.[1]

On the 1870 Census, Duncan Munroe was listed as a 63 year old, white male living in Buchanan, Haralson County, Georgia with his children: Benjamin Munroe, Mary Munroe, Eliza Munroe, and John M. Munroe. He was a house carpenter. The value of his real estate was $2000, and the value of his personal property was $900. His birthplace was listed as North Carolina.[2]

He married Matilda Morris on June 12, 1870 in Haralson County, Georgia. They had two children: Francis Calvin Munroe and James A. Munroe.[3]

On the 1880 Census, he was listed as a 73 year old, married, white male living in Haralson County, Georgia. Others in the household were: wife, Matilda; sons, Francis Calvin and James A. Munroe; Grandson, Robert H. Barry; and granddaughter, Florra A. Munroe. Duncan worked as a farmer. His birthplace and the birthplaces of his parents were listed as North Carolina. [4]

He died on December 17, 1896 in Haralson County, Georgia. He was buried at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Felton, Haralson County, Georgia.[5]

Are daughters Margaret C. Munroe Barry and Mary "Mollie" Munroe Barry the same person? Further research needs to be done on these two supposed siblings to try and figure out whether they are the same or different people.
