Biography

1907 DEATH or MRS. CHAS Murdoch. The hand of death has removed yet another of the pioneers of the Oxley district, in the person of Mrs. Jane Murdoch who passed away peacefully to the long rest on Wednesday morning at thier residence, Milawa The deceased who was the widow of the late Mr. Charles Murdoch, one of the districts most worthy pioneers, was the oldest, person in the Oxley district, and one of its oldest residents Born at Glasgow on June 16, 1808 who was only a month short of her 99th birthday She came to Australia with her brother Mr. Jno. Graham, and family in landing in Melbourne. She went next to Beechworth and from there to the Oxley district in 1857, being amongst the very first to arrive there. In 1860 she was married to Mr. Chas. Murdoch, Oxley and had the distinction of being the second lady married in Oxley. Throughout the district there was no person more respected and none more ready to offer a helping hand to her neighbours in their time of trouble, the great majority (if whom she had outlived. Her husband who was also one of the districts first settlers and most thorough farmers, predeceased her some 20 years ago at Woodside, Monkton (Scotland), whilst on a visit to his native home there. Mrs. Murdoch continued to live on at her home Milawa and en-joyed robust health until some eight years from which time she had been all invalid, and for the past six months had had been confined to her bed, receiving every care and attention. She had no family her only relatives here being her niece and nephew Mrs. G. H. Brown, and Mr. Jas. Graham, Cheshunt Her mortal remains were interred in the Milawa cemetery on Friday, a large number attending to pay their last token of respect to the memory of one long and honourably known in the, district, The funderal arrangements were in tile hands of Mr. `1`. Irving and the ceremonv at the grave was impressively conducted by Rev J. Hall Angus. 1907 Murdoch - On the 8th May at her late ITS residence `The Grange.` Milawa, Oxley, Jane relict of Charles Murdoch Aged 99 years.
