Charles A Murdoch (1868 – 1952)

Charles, the seventh child (5th son) of David and Harriett Murdoch, was born on April 15 1868 in Wakefield, Yorkshire where his grandmother Mary Ann Butler-Parkes was living in her widowhood. In 1871, he was aged 2, living with his family in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, before they moved to Monmouth in South Wales where his youngest sister was born.

Around 1873, his father deserted the family and went to Australia, and the four older boys and Marion were sent to Canada because Harriett could not support them. We know virtually nothing of what lead up to this dramatic breakup of the family, but the circumstances were summarised at the time of the arrival of Frederick, the first child to be received at the Marchmont Home in Belleville, Ontario: “Parents living at Monmouth where father was Revenue Officer, expelled for drink. Now in trying circumstances.” Charles is said to have been kept back in Britain because he had had a club-foot handicap. However in 1875 he was taken by his mother Harriet on a visit to Canada with his sisters Jessie and Lucy and they returned to the UK with his sister Marion. It appears that he was sent to lodge with a family in Matlock, Derbyshire and was there at school in 1881. He emigrated by himself to Ontario in May 1886 [aged 18], working as a labourer in Morrisburg, but soon moved to Chicago, thus becoming the fifth Murdoch boy to settle in the US.

Charles became a professional hotel and food service worker and was working in a New York hotel in 1898. In about 1901, he married Helen [Nellie] Mulligan and lived in Manhattan, appearing in the censuses between 1910 and 1930 in rented accommodation in E 29th St, W 20th St and W 14th Street. They had two children: Paul Clement Murdoch died at aged 2 and the other, Charles David Murdoch, died in a shooting incident at the age of 21. Charles snr had no grand-children.

In 1908 he was employed as steward by the builders of the Panama Canal to re-organize their food service. While in Panama, he had an idea for a machine that would revolutionize kitchens everywhere. He invented the Murdoch dishwashing machine for domestic and commercial use: its claim was that it could wash dishes, pots and pans in 5 minutes. He held at least five patents: one for the machine’s powerful pump. Charles spent most of his life trying to make a success of the Murdoch Washing Machine Company.

In 1910, Lucy (the youngest sister now married to Frank Wainwright) sailed to the US to effect a reunion of the family 36 years after they had first been split up. Charles travelled to Meriden to see Lucy and Fred and they then all travelled to Tacoma to visit Colin.

However, we think he spent the last years of his life impoverished, he and his wife living on welfare in New York City. He died in Pilgrim State Hospital, Long Island, NY of old age between 1950 and 1954.

Notes

N660Family bible entry shows name and date but no place.
Birth certificate record in Sharon's file. George Street, Wakefield.
Grandmother May Ann Butler was resident here at the time as widow, so did Harriett stay with her during the birth, or did David Murdoch have a posting there?
Father Inland Revenue officer
1871: 2, with parents and 5 sibs in Bromsgrove.
188: 12, lodger, scholar, with John W Boden, a grocer provision dealer in Matlock Bath, near Rutland Arms
Went to USA independently (brothers had been sent eariler by Baptist Mission) before 1910.
There's an entry in Ancestry's immigration records of a Chas Murdock, pastor, aged 27, returning to Liverpool via "Arizona" from NY in April 1892. This would put his birthdate in 1860 not 1868 so unlikely.
Identified on US 1920 census by birthplace of father (Scotland) and mother (England) and approx appropriate birthdate, and date of naturalisation into USA. But date of birth differs from family bible entry
Owned company called Murdoch Machine Corp, at 101 Park Avenue, NY Invented the Murdoch Dish-washer but went bankrupt because of poor PR. Pamphlet in Peter's file.
Died in Pilgrim State Hospital Long Island NY of old age.
Sharon writes: "He accompanied Harriet, Jessie, and Lucy to Canada on 18 May 1875 for a visit and to return Marion to the UK with them. As an adult tinsmith, he immigrated by himself into the USA on 22 Apr 1889”.
Ancestry.com's "Patrick Family Tree" says death was before 1954.
A search of Ellis Island for "c* murdo*" SOUNDEX, born 1868, retrieved no records.
Barbara Wainwright Carter's 22 Aug 1967 letter to Kay Wilson says that Charles' sons both died young. One died of pneumonia. The other of unexplained gunshot wounds in New York City at about age 21 (never solved by police).
According to Grace Johnson's 2 Feb 1945 notes, both sons died before2 Feb 1945. Also one son died at age 2 and the other at age 21.
According to the Census, 1920 Charles A. Murdoch, Manhattan, New York, Charles A. was naturalized in 1893 (partially illegible) [According to John Murdoch Patrick, Charles may have had a club foot, which could have helped prevent sending him to Canda as a 5 year old boy. Also "Mary (?Carter?) claims that he had gone to the US by 1903 and worked as an engineer in the Panama Canal, and later patented a dish-washing machine in Ohio but made no money from it because he was not good at PR."
