Personal History

Joellen Murdock Donkle (1925-2008)

Joellen M. Donkle, age 82, of Michigan City, died Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Carol’s Home in New Buffalo, MI. Joellen and her husband, Lucius B. Donkle, Jr., were married for 56 years and built their house in the Duneland Beach area of Michigan City in 1974. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home, Michigan City, IN. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh, WI the next day. There will also be a visitation at Carlisle Funeral Home on Thursday, March 13, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Mrs. Donkle was born November 11, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph Kepler and Barbara Smith Murdock, both of whom preceded her in death. On February 22, 1952, she married Lucius Boardman Donkle, Jr. he survives in Duneland Beach. Also surviving are sons Lucius Boardman Donkle III of Valparaiso, IN, and Christian Kepler Donkle of Ottawa, Illinois, United States daughter Heidi Donkle Conn of Turner, ME, 7 grandchildren, Lucius B. Donkle IV, Alexander P. Donkle, Daniel, Victoria and Jillian Donkle, and Wayne and Gretchen Conn, sisters Margot Murdock Eby of Pittsburgh, PA, and Helen Murdock Meyer of South Laguna, CA.

After a career as an editor and journalist, Mrs. Donkle was a reading specialist with the Michigan City Area Schools for over 25 years until her retirement. In 1991 she was honored by the Indiana State Reading Association with their service award. She was a graduate of Roosevelt University with a B.S. in English Education and received her M.S. in Education degree from Indiana University. She also attended Morgan Park High School in Chicago and Gulf Park College for Women in Gulfport, Mississippi. She was a board member of Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children, a member of the League of Women Voters, and a member of the Michigan City Yacht Club. She loved sailing all her life. Memorial contributions to the Michigan City Salvation Army would be appreciated.
