Biography

Viola Constance (Connie) Prowse was born in 1903 in Murray Harbour.[1] She was the daughter of David P. Murdock and Unknown Jordan.

Connie married Gerald Prowse on Sept. 1, 1925 in Murray Harbour.[1] They had 4 children. Gerald inherited Prowse House, the 20-room mansion in the heart of Murray Harbour that his grandfather, Samuel Prowse, had built in the mid-1870s.[2] Gerald and Connie operated a hotel on the premises until about 1965,[3] after which time they continued to live in the house as a private residence.

Connie died in 2000 and was buried in the Murray Harbour Cemetery.[4]

Connie and Gerald Prowse were my great aunt and uncle. I have fond memories of visiting them in Murray Harbour, and exploring the house. And I recall that, no matter what time of day we arrived, Connie would never let us leave without having something to eat.

I also remember their 55th wedding anniversary party in 1980. Besides friends and family (I met many 2nd cousins that day), former guests of the hotel were invited and a great many of them came. It was the biggest party I had ever seen!
