A description of his family is found in the 1850 Agricultural census. He had 80 improved and 620 unimproved acres at a value of $1200, value of farm machinery $25. Livestock: 2 horses; 4 milch cows; 6 working oxen; 20 other cattle; 20 sheep; 40 swine at a value of $410. Produce: 600 bushels Indian Corn; 12 bushels oats; 30 pounds wool, 3 bushels peas and beans; 10 bushels Irish potatoes; 12 bushels sweet potatoes; 208 pounds butter, 12 tons hay; 30 pounds flax, 3 bushels flax seed; 70 pounds beeswax. Value of homemade manufacturing $28, value of animals slaughtered $62.[6]

In 1870 John Murphy was living in Hazel Green Precinct, Wolfe County, Kentucky, United States with his family on a farm they own. He was 51 born in Kentucky, Working as a farmer, can read and write, has real estate of $2500 and personal estate $2274. His wife Sarah was 50 born in Kentucky, cannot read or write and is listed as insane. The others in the home were children: Nancy 19; Fanny 16; Robert 15; Matilda 12; John L 10; Newton 4.[8]
In 1880 John Murphy was living in Wolfe County, Kentucky, United States with his family. He was 60 born in Kentucky, working as a farmer and can read and write. His wife Sarah was 59 born in Kentucky and cannot read or write. The only other one in the home was son Newton 13. [9]
Another description of his farm is found in 1880. He owned the farm and had 150 acres tilled land, 20 acres pasture, 325 acres woodland, valued at $3000, machinery $75, livestock $400. He paid $200 building fences this year and $200 for 35 weeks of labor. Livestock: 9 horses; 4 working oxen, 2 milch cows; 14 other cattle; 1 cow purchased, 8 cows sold, 300 pounds butter made; 13 lambs dropped; 1 lamb slaughtered, 1 lamb died of disease; 23 fleeces for 50 pounds; 50 swine on hand; 10 barn yard poultry; 130 other poultry and 200 dozen eggs. Produce: 33 acres for 1000 bushels Indian corn; 20 acers for 200 bushels oats; 2 acres for 14 bushels rye; 1 acre sugar for 85 gallons molasses; 6 acres apples with 100 trees for 800 bushels; value of orchard $75; 100 pounds bees wax. 40 chords of wood cut; $40 of woodland produce.[10]
In the Civil War he served in Company A and B of the 14th Illinois Infantry. He filed for pension 13 May 1884 and his widow Sally filed for widows pension 26 Mar 1886.[11]
He died about 1886 in Wolfe County, Kentucky, United States.[12]
He is buried in the Howard Hasley Cemetery, Wolfe County, Kentucky, United States.[12]
