Biography

Allin married Dorothy Beecham at St Mary, Newark, Nottinghamshire 31 May 1830 ^[1].

At the time of their son John's burial on 22nd March 1831 the family was living at Stockwell Gate, Mansfield ^[2].

On 6 June 1841 Allin (Brush maker, aged 35-39) born Belfast, Ireland) and Dorothy (aged 35-39, born out of county) appear in 1841 census at Curriers' Alley, Broxtowe, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

In 1850 Allin married Jane Teather at the Independent Chapel, Mansfield ^[4].

In the 1851 census, location is 1082 Leeming Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, with new wife, Jane, born Rufford, Nottinghamshire.

In 1857, he (Allin) was a witness at the trial of a robbery, where he stated that he had received a £10 note from the "prisoners" (the accused), in payment for brushes (the theft included a £10 note)^[6].

In the 1861 census, location is still Leeming street, birthplace still Belfast. Only daughter is Elizabeth, dress maker.

On 2 April 1871 Allin (age 65) was the head of household on Leeming Street, Mansfield.

Allin wrote his (last) will on 12 September 1872. At that time he describes himself as a brush maker, and the business as a going concern. His estate is to go in two parts to his wife Jane, and one part to his daughter Elizabeth Limb. Any of his estate remaining at the time of Jane's death is to pass to Elizabeth, and then to granddaughter Jane Limb. Any estate remaining at Elizabeth's death is to pass to Jane Limb. There is no mention in the will of his first daughter, Katherine Mary (Murphy) Marshall, who had died in 1864, or her surviving daughter Catherine Mary. Allen Murphy died on 12 March 1873 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire ^[9], and his death was registered in the March quarter of 1873, under the name Allen Murphey (sic) ^[10].

An 1819 directory lists Belfast Brushmakers Byers, James, 17 Marquis Street Cannavan, Patrick, 106 Ann Street Gray, Mary, 118 North Street Jameson, Hugh, 63 Smithfield Morrison, John, Shank Hill Road (Shankill) Turner, George, 10 Margaret Street ^[11].

A 1824 Belfast Piggot's directory shows the Brushmakers (Carlin, Fox, Jamieson and Morrison) were all on North Street.
