Biography

Massachusetts state seal
Agnes Murphy was a Massachusettsan.

Agnes Cecelia MURPHY, b. 23 July 1902 Cambridge, Mass., daughter of animal tender Walter J and Anastasia (Gaule) Murphy, both born in Ireland.[1] She was a first generation American. She was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church on 30 July 1902 at the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Cambridge, Mass.[2] She was 16 years old when her older brother Thomas died fighting in France in 1918. By 1920, Agnes, 17, had left school and was working full-time as a packer in a cracker factory.[3]

Agnes married 17 Jan 1926 at St. Catherine’s parish, Somerville, Mass. Michael John HEGARTY, son of John and Margaret (Deasy) Hegarty of Cambridge.[4] Michael then worked at a printing press; during the Depression he got work at the Cambridge electric company. They lived in Somerville near Agnes’s parents and siblings[5], and had seven children.[6]

Michael died in 1970. Agnes lost part of one leg to diabetes and moved into an apartment in Somerville in a multifamily house owned by one of her sons.[7]

Agnes died 23 January 1985 and is buried at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody, Mass.[8]
