CONT There passed away last evening at Britannia, following an attack of pneumonia, one of the pioneers of the community in the person of William Henry Murphy, in his 78th year. Born in Bytown in 1843, the late Mr. Murphy spent his boyhood here, obtaining whatever educational facilities were to be secured in the schools of that day, and early in life entering into lumbering operations with his father, the late Matthew Murphy, in Ottawa County. When this venture proved unsuccessful, he entered the employ of the Bronson and Weston firm in 1865, and later was with the Conroy estate for a number of years. CONT For about ten years he held a responsible position in the construction work of the Canadian Pacific Railway, relinquishing it to engage in business in Britannia, from which he retired about five years ago, owing to failing health. The late Mr. Murphy was married in 1867 to Mary Jane Ramsay, of Aylmer, who survives him, together with two sons, Edward E., and John Albert, contractors, of Ottawa, and three daughters, Mrs. John E. Starr, of Saginaw, Mich.; Miss Elizabeth, at home, and Mrs. J.E. Hodgins, 1068 Bronson Avenue. The eldest son, William Henry, died 7 years ago. Mr. Murphy was the eldest of seven children, of whom only two brothers survive, Mr. James C. Murphy, of Woodroffe, and John A., of the Government Printing Bureau. In religion Mr. Murphy was a Methodist, and he will be missed by many friends attending the Britannia Hill church. CONT The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon at two oclock. Interment will be made in Bellevue Cemetery, Aylmer Road. CONT
