↑ Source: #S0040 Page: 36 Data: Text: S.S. #8 CONT In the 1980's, the United Church occupies the site where in 1832, the log school built by Charles Shirreff in the north end of the settlement of Fitzroy Harbour functioned as a hall and an interdenominational church as well. The original teacher at the log school, distinguished as the first school established in the township of Fitzroy, was a man named Ramsay. Jacob Tyndale is recorded as the school master in 1843. CONT In 1853, a log building on the corner opposite the old Shirreff home became the village's school where Miss Fortune, Miss Greenslees, and Richard Foster stood before their pupils as teachers. CONT Before the close of the 1800's, the population had outgrown the log school, and a replacement was erected on a piece of land purchased from Alexander Shirreff for the sum of two hundred dollars without interest. (In 1983, the building was sold by Jack Douglas, dismantled log by log and rebuilt in the Lanark area.) CONT
