Marriage and Family

In July 2016 a Scotland genealogist found that Elizabeth had 2 children before her marriage. No father was recorded and they had the surname of Murphy.

  1. Andrew Murphy was born on 14 February 1886 at Townend, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. He died at the same place on 20 February 1886 at 6 days of age due to premature birth.
  2. James Patrick Murphy (later called McAdam) was born on 20 September 1891 at Townend, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. This son often appeared as cousin or sometimes brother on records. It was probably done in an effort to make him appear legitimate. He would have been 3 years old when his mother married Thomas McAdam.

She married Thomas McAdam on 5 January 1894 at Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Chapel in Kirkcudbright, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. It was witnessed by George Murphy and Ellen Wilson. The address given at the marriage was Glentoo Balmaghie and she was called Lizzie on the certificate. Lizzie was 30 and Thomas was 18.

Children of the McAdam-Murphy Marriage

  1. Elizabeth McAdam was born on 17 June 1894 in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. She married George Asa Burlingame (1884-1951) on 14 January 1920 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York. Lizzie died in May 1976 in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, United States at the age of 81.
  2. Margaret Walburga Cowden McAdam was born on 20 April 1898 in at Burnside Cottages in Drumstinchall, Colvend, Scotland and registered by her father. She married Clifford Paul Wheeler (1895-1961) on 3 June 1918 in Olean, New York. Maggie died on 13 November 1963 in Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles, California, United States at the age of 65.
  3. William Patrick McAdam was born on 2 June 1903 on George Gray Street in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He married Lottie J. Myers (1915-2012) before 1932. They divorced. William died on 11 July 1960 in New York, United States.

In 1901 Elizabeth and Thomas and their daughters lived at 5 George Gray Street Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland. In 1914 her husband departed to find a better life for the family. He sailed on the Cunard line's "Saturn" and landed in the port of Quebec, Canada on 6 August 1914. The passenger docket says that his wife Elizabeth is in Glasgow, Scotland and he is traveling to Olean, New York to live with his cousin James McMullen.

Lizzie and her three McAdam children departed from Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland in September 1915 aboard the Donaldson Line's "Athenia". They arrived in Québec, Canada on 28 September 1915 and were detained due to Lizzie's illness. Accompanied by her eldest daughter, Lizzie, she returned to Glasgow, Scotland in October 1915, on the same ship, arriving on 17 October 1915 according to the United Kingdom, Incoming Passenger Lists. The two younger children, Margaret who was 17 and William who was 12 went ahead to the border crossing from Canada to the United States at Buffalo, New York. They joined their father in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York, United States.

Death and Burial

Elizabeth and her eldest daughter, Lizzie stayed at 293 High Street in Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland upon their return. Elizabeth died at this place on 6 February 1916 with Lizzie in attendance. The death certificate says cause of death was "Phthisio Pulmonalis", otherwise known as pulmonary tuberculosis. Her daughter Lizzie returned to Olean, Cattaraugus, New York after the death and burial.[2] She was buried on 9 February at Dalbeattie Cemetery, Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright, Scotland.
