David Murray, a very old colonist, died at his residence in Launceston, yesterday in his 74th year. He took an active part in public affairs many years ago, but of late had lived a retired life. He was a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, and leaves a large family. [2]
Death of Mr David Murray.— It would seem that the list of losses of old Launceston identities this year was never to have a break. Yesterday it was noticed that the flags of the shipping and of the Post Office were at half-mast, and enquiry proved that this was a mark of respect to the late Mr David Murray, who was well known in shipping circles. Mr Murray, who at the time of his death was 73 years of age, arrived in the colony when an infant of two, being a son of one of the earliest Tasmanian pioneers. He leaves eight, sons and three daughters, all of whom are living. One is a lawyer at Devonport, another is engaged at the Bank of Australasia, and other sons are following agricultural pursuits in the other colonies. Mr Murray had three sisters in Launceston, Mrs. Charles Harris, Mrs John Lyne, and Miss Murray, who has a ladies' school in Tamar-Street. Deceased was for some years a member of Parliament, and represented the district of Selby. He was a relation of the Rev. Wallace Murray, of New Norfolk, and cousin of the late H. T. A. Murray, police magistrate. His friends, who are very numerous, as well as his immediate relatives, unite in crediting him with having been a good-hearted man, while the latter testify to his having proved the best of husbands and fathers. The immediate cause of death is attributed to a cold caught on Saturday week when, in company with Mr Lyne, he attended the late Capt. Tulloch's funeral. Inflammation of the lungs set in, and he died at a quarter to 11 on Saturday morning, although Drs, Maddox, Hogg, and Johnson were called in. [3]
