Biography

Cleveland "Eugene," son of Cleveland Eugene Murray and Florence Gertrude Chesterman,[1] was born 27 May 1887 in Richmond, Virginia.[1][2][3] In 1900 his family there included his parents Cleveland E. (age 50, policeman) and Florence G Murray (43), Eugene (13), and his siblings Ernest Clifford (21, telephone operator), Forrest Chesterman (20, dry goods clerk), Mary Chesterman (17), Edith Dallas (9), Gertrude Beatrice (7) and Josephine E. (1).[2]

After his father's death in 1904,[4] Eugene C. (22. office clerk) continued to live with his mother Florence G. (age 52) and siblings Mary C. (24, stenographer, real estate office), Edith D. (19), Gertrude B. (17) and Josephine C. (10).[5]

On 24 July 1915 in Washington, DC, he married Edith Montgomery[6] with whom he had two children (one possibly still living):

  • Chesterman Murray (b. 8 June 1915;[7] d. 13 October 1921 at age six from pneumococcal meningitis).[7]

When he registered for the draft in 1917, he was a cashier for the Southern Railway at Richmond.[3] He reported that he had served three years as a private in the Virginia National Guard in the artillery branch.[3] He was described as short and slender with light blue eyes and slightly balding light brown hair.[3]

Residing together in Richmond in 1920 were Eugene (age 32, railroad cashier), his wife Edith (26), their son Chesterman (3) and an eight-month-old daughter.[8]

Eugene and Edith divorced on 23 October 1922 on the grounds that he deserted her and their daughter.[9]

In 1942 the 54-year-old Eugene resided at the Railroad YMCA in Richmond and used his sister Mary Rebman as his contact.[10] He continued to work for the Southern Railway as a ticket agent.[10] He was described as 5'7", 122 lbs. with blue eyes, gray hair, a light complexion and a scar on his chin.[10]

Eugene died 13 August 1970 at the Westport Manor Nursing Home in Richmond from cardiovascular disease.[1] He was buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.[11]
