David Murray and all of the male descendants from his sons are members of the Haplogroup R-U152 and specifically share a most distant ancestor from The Murray of Falahill and Philiphaugh /Cockpool / Elibank line via SNP BY-97629 which is shared with a majority of men named Murray and Morrow as well as members of families from Friesland and Nord Netherlands as well as areas bordering Germany. These European families split approximately 900 years ago . So these Murrays have used the surname Murray for almost 1,000 years.

According to the Scots Peerage this line of Murrays descended from the Murrays of Bothwell. Source to be provided (POMS Medieval Database) Members of this extensive lineage family have undertaken YDNA testing in large numbers and all match each other. This testing includes BigY700 NGS SNP testing as well as YDNA STR tests. Members tested include those from the branches of Murray of Cockpool ; Murray of Stanhope ; Murray of Philiphaugh and Falahill and tentatively Murray of Blackbarony.
