Mary Elizabeth Murray was born about 1835 or 1836 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbright, the daughter of Peter Murray and Susannah Whiteley.^[1]

She married William Smith Kerr on 17 September 1861 in Troqueer, Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire.^[2] He was by then a medical doctor. They would have eight children:^[3]

• James Kerr born 3 October 1862 at Turfholm, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire; married Hilda Temple 30 November 1893 in Orbost, Victoria, Australia; died 28 June 1928 in Orbost
• Peter Murray Kerr born 29 December 1863 at Buccleuch Street, Dumfries;^[4] married Elizabeth Henrietta Susan Thomson Milligan 9 August 1904 in Dunscore; died 1941 in Dumfries

Mary Elizabeth Kerr died on 30 May 1891 at an address in Castle St, Dumfries, possibly number 20.^[4] She was 55. Her son Peter Murray Kerr was both the attending doctor and the informant for the registration of her death.^[12]

Colin McGrath says that all the following children were also born at 29 Buccleuch Street except the last, John, who was born at 20 Castle Street, Dumfries.
