Robert came to America with his parents and lived in the Swatara area until about 1750, when he moved to North Carolina during the immigration rush. After a few years, he moved north to New York and became a merchant. He purchased a tract of land known as "Murray Hill" in the heart of New York City. It became historical as the spot where Robert's wife entertained Lord Howe and his officers long enough for American troops under Putnam to escape during the Revolutionary War.
Robert and Mary had 12 children in all, but only four were noted in the records - Lindley, John, Beulah, and Susan.
