Biography

James Murray was born in 1819 in Richmond, New South Wales (Australia). He was a son of Kennedy Murray and Ann Parker. [1]

James married Jane Carter in 1843 in All Saints Church of England (Anglican Church), Sutton Forest, in New South Wales' Southern Highlands. [2] Making their home in the Southern Highlands, at Canyonleigh west of Sutton Forest, the couple had eight sons and a daughter:

  1. John (1843-1915)
  2. Jane (1846-unknown)
  3. William (1847-1916)
  4. Richard (1850-1934)
  5. Charles (1852-1925)
  6. Edward (1854-1928); livi
  7. Benjamin Henry (1856-1936)
  8. James (1859-1937)
  9. Solomon Kennedy (1862-1956)

Whilst Jane was busy caring for her fast-growing brood, James operated a general store near the confluence of the nearby Paddy's River and the Wollondilly River (in the upper Hawkesbury-Nepean catchment) and on the main southern road between Berrima and Marulan. [3] When the southern railway came through the region, further to the east, the store suffered.

Aged 59 years, he passed away on 15th September 1879 in Liverpool, New South Wales. [4] He was survived by his wife, who lived until 1911, their eight sons and at least six grandchildren.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Hi Ken and Jeanette, I can't see a marriage for James Murray and Jane Carter in 1862. The marriage source on the profile is for two entirely different people (George Richards and Helen Fenn). The marriage for james and Jane seems to be in 1843 in NSW (350/1843 V1843350 27C) and the couple seem to have had 9 children from 1843 to 1862, the last 3 once the district was included in the Indexes after 1855, were in the Berrima area. Does this accord with your records? Thanks Gillian.
