Ethel Elizabeth Murrell was born in Wandsworth district, London in 1896 ^[1] . She was the daughter of John Murrell and Mary Mantell^[2]

She was baptised on 3 January 1897 in Southfields St Michael and All Angels, Wandsworth, and was the daughter of John William Murrell, a gardener, and Mary Matilda his wife ^[3]

Ethel married Robert Steele Porteous in Edinburgh on 27 May 1927. Her parents were shown on the marriage certificate to be John William Murrell, a hairdresser and Matilda nee Mantle. Both are marked as deceased. ^[4].

In 1945, Ethel E Porteous and Robert S Porteous are shown at 75, Stevenson Drive, Edinburgeh, on the Edinburgh, Scotland, Electoral Registers, 1945 Register of Voters For the City of Edinburgh and the Burgh of Leith^[5].
