Biography

Martha Evelyn Muse McCall was born 14 Dec 1853 in Union County, NC. Her parents were John McAuley Muse (abt.1822-1860) & Susannah Malinda "Susan" Pinion (abt.1830-aft.1860). Her paternal grandparents were Braswell Muse (abt. 1796-abt.1870) & Emily McAuley (abt.1785-bef.1858). And her maternal grandparents are thought to be Reuben Wilson Pinion (1800-abt.1855) & Susanna Tarleton (abt.1802-??), but we have no definitive proof of this.

Martha married Samuel Hoke McCall on 23 Dec 1872 in Mecklenburg County. Their children--all of which were born in Mecklenburg County--were: Carrie Elizabeth, Josiah Franklin, Emma Celestia, Livingston Kasuth & Etta Jane (twins), Mary Julia, Nannie Eugenia & Lula Belle (twins), Ida Leona, Annis Matilda, a set of twins, Samuel Irvin, Matthew Alexander, & Olive May McCall.

Martha & Hoke lived in the Sardis community in Mecklenburg County when they were first married. Later, they moved to the Poplar Tent community in Cabarrus County where they remained until Hoke retired due to ill health. They then moved back to Charlotte. Hoke died in 1919 & was buried at Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery #3. Martha died 18 Feb 1928 in Charlotte, NC & was buried at Sugaw Creek by his side.
