Biography

Herbert Musgrave was born on 11th May 1875 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. He was the youngest son of Sir Anthony Musgrave, Governor of South Australia, and his second wife, Jeanie Lucinda Field, daughter of David Dudley Field.[1]

In 1896, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. Three years later, he was sent to South Africa, where he remained throughout the Boer War. He was later placed in charge of the Royal Flying Corps' experiments, including research in ballooning, kiting, wireless telegraphy, photography, meteorology and bomb-dropping. In January 1915, he commanded the 104th Royal Field Artillery Battery, having been promoted Major.

He married Georgiana Hopkins on 23rd April 1915,[2] by whom he had two children: Jeanie Lucinda and Herbert William Dudley Musgrave (born 1918 one month after his father's death).

Back in the field, he was wounded on 10th August 1916, requiring several surgeries and lengthy recuperation. He returned to France in December 1917 and was on a patrol behind German lines when he was killed by a grenade on 2nd June 1918.

Herbert was killed in action in France on 2nd June 1918, and was buried in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, Esquelbecq, Departement du Nord[3].
