One of eleven children born to Cally Mushatt and Mary (Cook) Musahtt, Susannah (Mushatt) Jones was the oldest living person from June 17, 2015 - May 12, 2016.
She always wanted to be a teacher and was accepted to the Tuskegee Institute’s teacher training program, but could not afford to go.
She used her salary to help send her nieces to college and set up a college scholarship fund for African-American students at her high school called the Calhoun Club.
According to her family her favourite luxury was high-end lace lingerie. She reportedly once told a surprised nurse "You can never get too old to wear fancy stuff."
She married a man named Henry Jones in 1928, but they divorced in 1933, they had no children.
Her oldest niece (Lavilla (Mushatt) Watson) wrote a book about her. More than 100 nieces and nephews, who know her as "Tee" (short for Auntie)
