SHADRACK MUSTAIN Son of Avery Mustain J- 5 SHADRACK M. MUSTAIN, (Avery 2, Thomas 1), fourth son of Avory and Mary (Barber-Shelton) Mustain, was born July 11, 1792, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, died July 16, 1865, Wilton, Boone County, Missouri. He married August 16, 1813, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, Margaret Devin, born April 4, 1794 (or June), died September 15, 1861, Hickory County, Missouri, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Nowlin) Devin. It is interesting that the marriage bond indicates that they had been married "since June 1813". The mariage was performed by Rev. David Nowlin, uncle of Margaret Devin. Shadrack married second, Missouri, Margaret (Goodson) Owings, widow of Jonathan Owings. Shadrack was an ordained Baptist Minister (July, 1814), and his name is found often in the Pittsylvania County marriage records until about 1820. 1820 Pittsylvania County Census - page 799 Shadrack Mustain - males 2000100; females 0201000 By 1830 Shadrack was relocated in Tennessee in Bedford County, the portion of Bedford County which later became Marshall County. Shadrack purchased land here in 1834 from Alford Blair. In 1835, Shadrack sells the land his father willed to him in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to his brother, Joel. In this deed Shadrack is described as being from Bedford County, Tennessee. From the Grantor Index to Deeds, Trust Deeds, Liens, etc. Pittsylvania County, Virginia: July 17, 1815 - Shadrack Mustain to Richard B. Beck (B&D 19 p.182) February 15, 1819 - Shadrack (wf Margaret) to John Ward Sr. (B&D Book 22 p. 174) April 23, 1830 - Shadrack (wf Margaret) to Jordan Lipscomb. (B&D Book 31 p. 601). October 20, 1834 - Avory (Est) Shadrack (By Comr) (B&D Book 37 p 53) April 18, 1836 - Shadrack (Wf Margaret) to Joel Mustain (B&D Book 38, p 310-312) Recorded in Deed Book 22, 179, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, is the indenture where Shadrack purchased land February 4, 1819, from Daniel Clements and Wilmoth his wife, for the sum of $425.00 the tract lying on both sides of Sycamore Creek containing 170 acres. Bordered by Edward Franklins line, George Camps line, Isaac Coles line and Thomas Daltons line. 1830 Bedford County, Tennessee Census - page 4 Shadrack Mustain - males 1210010; females 1311010 In the very first Marshall County, Tennessee Court Records in 1836, Shadrack appears as a donar of some farm hands to build roads. He also appears on the "jury of View", a group of landowners requested by the court to view the road work and give an official approval. Additionally he is mentioned in a court order of the same time frame that indicates he lived near Elisha Garrett in the 15th District of McCleaslies Creek. Shadrack appears throughout the 1840's in many Marshall County court records and minutes as administrator, security and guardian for estates of several people: James Devin (probably his wife's brother), John Blackwell, John B. Fowler and William Williams. He also appears on the 1840 and 1841 tax list for Marshall County. 1840 Marshall County, Tennessee Census Shadrack Mustain - males 10111100; females 121210100 A short distance away lived Joseph Mustain and family, the oldest son of Shadrack. Marshall County land records indicate Shadrack was buyer and seller of slaves. A brief summary of the transactions in which he was involved follow: October 29, 1834 - Shadrack sells to David Nowlin 125 A for $500. Bedford County. February 6, 1840 - Elizabeth Nowlin Devin (mother-in-law of Shadrack) sells to Shadrack Mustain a man slave named Silas for $250. "in consideration of his attendance to a lawsuit for me." October 16, 1841 - Shadrack Mustain sells to Thomas Hardin for $400. a girl slave named Susan about 8 years old. October 16, 1840 - Thomas Hardin sells to Shadrack mustain 37_ acres for $500. in Marshall County. August 18, 1849 - Shadrack sells 2 slaves, 1 boy named Peter and 1 girl named Coley Ann. August 18, 1849 - Shadrack sells 1 Negro woman named Massey and her child Henry. November 15, 1849 Shadrack sells 187_ acres to G. A. Armstrong, for $2,000.00 The last transaction described above indicates that Shadrack sold the remainder of his property in preparation for his move to jjissouri. By 1850 Shadrack had moved his family to St. Clair County, Missouri. No land records in St. Clair County indicate he purchased land there. Near by lives his brother Thomas Mustain. 1850 St. Clair County, Missouri Census - page 184 Shadrack Mustain 58 VA minister Margaret 56 VA John L. 21 VA Cloe W. 14 TN Shadrack T. 12 TN Margaret L. 8 TN The oldest son of Shadrack, Joseph D. Shadrack is referred to as the surviving partner. Simeon Garrett was appointed administrator of his other property along with the wife of Joseph. 1860 Hickory County, Missouri Census - page 665 Shadrack Mustain 67 VA Margaret 66 VA _j Shadrack T. 21 TN P,v^ |lpn~ Margaret L. 18 TN 271 DEVIN FAMILY - The following information was submitted by Mrs. Pauline Gray: MARGARET DEVIN, was born April 4, 1794, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and died September 15, 1861, Hickory County, Missouri. She was the daughter of Joseph Devin and his wife, Elizabeth Nowlin. Jospeh Devin was born about 1760 in Pennsylvania. His and his parents William and Sarah (Smith) Devin moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia about 1767. William is said to have been born in Dublin, Ireland in 1724. He was a patriot in the American Revolution giving food and supplies to the army. Elizabeth Nowlin was born May 20, 1766 in what is now Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the eldest child of Bryan Ward Nolin and Lucy Wade, daughter of Edward Wade and Lucy Clemons. Bryan Ward Nowlin was also a Revolutionary War patriot. He was the son of James Nowlin and Martha Collins. James Nowlin's father was also named James and his mother was Catherine Ward. James I came from Ireland around 1700. He indentured himself to the captain of the vessel to secure his passage. When he arrived in Virginia he was sold to Catherine Ward's father. Joseph Devin, Margaret Devin Mustain's father, died May 26, 1804, when she was only 10 years old. Her mother was left with 7 children, four younger than Margaret. Although Shadrack died only four years after his wife, Margaret Devin, he remarried Margaret (Goodson) Owings, and fathered two more children, also he moved to Boone County, Missouri where he died July 16, 1865, and is buried in Goshen Primitive Baptist Cemetery (sec. 26, Cedas t wp. 154). His tombstone reads, "Elder S. Mustain, died July 16, 1865, age 75". Beth Murphy, a descendant of Shadrack Mustain, has written a short history of life in the area's where Shadrack lived and died. I quote from her. "It is interesting to speculate why Shadrack moved his family so often. One reason might be that he was a minister of the gospel and he was bringing the word to the multitudes. Other possible reasons might be obtained by looking at Missouri history in that time frame. The area was anything but boring before the Civil War. The Mustains weren't far from the Kansas-Missouri border. From 1854 to 1861 controversy sparked by the slavery issue created the Border Wars in that area. In 1856 proslavery raiders destroyed the city of Lawrence, Kansas. John Brown, the Bible quoting abolitionist, sought revenge in this area. Even before the Civil War began at least 55 lives were lost in Missouri-Kansas Border warfare." "Since Shadrack owned slaves in Tennessee, it is curious where he might of stood on this issue. In 1860 he had relocated to Hickory County, Missouri slightly east of his St. Clair County residence in 1850. In the 1860 census Shadrack is residing near the twon of Quincy. Shadrack Sr. lists his profession as a Regular Baptist Clergyman, and Shadrack Jr. is a farmer." "If the area of Missouri was violent before the Civil War with Kansas- Missouri border skirmishes, the war and post war activity was worse. In 1863 the Union Commander, Brigadier General Thomas Ewing, issued an order in three Missouri Counties (and part of a fourth) for all civilians to leave within fifteen days if they could not prove their loyalty to the Union. Since few could, many left the area. Bates County, on the west border of St. Clair, was virtually emptied. Following the order 15 days later, Ewing and other Kansas Union guerrillas looted and burned the area, murdering those that remained." "From episodes such as this arose participants in post Civil War violence. Jesse and Frank James from Liberty, Clay County, Missouri had served under William Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson in the war. These Southern leaders were masters of violent guerrilla warfare, and so the James brothers 272 carried on the warfare after their cause had been lost. Post war years found Missouri farmers desperate for money and banks with tight money policies and high interest rates. When the James boys rode against Missouri banks farmers sent their sympathies with them." "So it seems the Missouri environment in which the Mustains liv'ed was not condusive to peaceful existance. Perhaps this is another reason for their mobile lifestyle." In Marshall County, Tennessee Marriages the following was found: Eliz abeth P. Mustain (d. ca 1844), married September 15, 1841, Joseph D. Dear; Sarah Ann Mustain married February 10, 1845, Joseph D. Dear (widower of sister Elizabeth Mustain). Talitha Mustain married April 15, 1850, James Leach.
