Biography

William Jasper Myers was born on or near April 1, 1847 in Missouri, possibly in an area that later became Carter county. He died January 6, 1915 in Pike Creek, Shannon, Missouri.[1] He married Nancy in about 1863. Some researchers use a marriage record dated April 1867 Washington county Missouri for William J. Myers & Nancy Gibson, but their first child was born in 1864, so the marriage date, and hence Nancy's maiden name, is somewhat doubtful.[2] They had 7 known children:

  1. Mahala Myers
  2. Lewis Myres
  3. James Myers
  4. William Myers
  5. Sarah Myers
  6. Mary Myers
  7. Thomas Myers

In December of 1908, Jasper's wife and son James died. In 1910, he married the widow Docia (Gossett) Magness, a woman thirty years younger than he who had five children, ages 5 to 19. On January 6, 1915, Jasper was shot and killed in his home. The Shannon Herald reported on Jan. 15th that, "young VanWinkle had been paying court to a stepdaughter of Mr. Myers, rather against the wishes of Mr. Myers, who took a 22 rifle and went to the room to order VanWinkle to leave, when VanWinkle shot Mr. Myers four times in the breast, death resulting instantly." It was reported on February 4th that Mrs. [Docia] Myers was charged as an accessory in the murder and arrested; the charges were dropped in May. VanWinkle was convicted on February 10th and sentenced to 29 years.
