Hedwidge appears to be the daughter of Joseph Menard and Hélène Rivard, born and baptized 18 May 1821 in Sorel, Bas-Canada. The Saint Pierre de Sorel parish register identifies her as "Hedwidge née aujourd'hui du légitime mariage de Joseph Menard journalier et de Hélène Rivard. Le parain Joseph Goin. Marraine Julie Ladebauche."[1]
It appears that on 1 January 1841, she married Andrew Fontaine in St. Albans, Vermont. The marriage record identifies her as Adriage Minor and Andrew as Andrew Surprenot, and officiating party as Orris Pier.[2] Census data suggests that the couple had 9 children:
US sources identify Hedwidge's surname differently: Edvedge Goocher, per 1935 death notice for son Alexander Fontaine[8]; Edvidge Maynard per 1941 death notice for son Andrew Fontaine[9]; and Aderline Fountaine, per 1880 United States Census.[5] In addition, the Vermont marriage record for Andrew Surprenot and Adriage Minor is similar to one of Sophie Minor and Andrew Surprenot, who may possibly be her sister Sophie Menard. The officiating pastor, Orris Pier, was likely not Catholic. Additional sources are needed to support these marriages.
