Biography

Katherine (Müller) Miller was born March 31, 1836 in Werschau, Limburg-Weilburg, Hessen-Nassau, Germany. She is the daughter of Joseph (Müller) Miller and Catherine Pabst [1] [2]

Somewhere between the years 1852-1855, the Müller family emigrated to America. They initially settled in Huron Township, Erie, Ohio, near Sandusky on Lake Erie. Shortly after arriving, the spelling of the family name was changed to Miller. [3]

Katherine Miller and Michael Velten obtained a marriage license on May 7, 1856 in Sherman Township, Huron, Ohio. [4] [5]

Katherine (Müller) Miller married Michael Velten, on May 13, 1856 in Sherman Township, Huron, Ohio. [6] They were most probably married in St. Sebastian's Church in Bismarck by Fr. Peter Wilhelmy, one of the missionary priests from Marywood assigned to St. Sebastian at this time. The marriage entry was recorded in the record books of St. Michael's Church in Marywood (Frank) by Fr. Wilhelmy. But the marriage return submitted by Fr. Wilhelmy indicated that the marriage was performed in "Scheurman." [7]

After their marriage, Katherine and Michael lived with Katherine's parents Joseph and Catherine Miller on their farm in Huron township in Erie County, near Sandusky. Their first three children, Mary Elizabeth Velten, Joseph Frank Velten, and Margaret Theresa Velten were born in Erie County. [8]

The 1860 Federal Census listed Katherine, her husband Michael and her daughter Mary Elizabeth as living with her parents Joseph and Catherine, her brothers Joseph C. and John and her sisters Margaret and Elizabeth on their farm in Huron Township, Erie, Ohio. [9] [10]

Katherine became Maria Isabella Casanova's godparent at her Baptism on July 30, 1865 in St. Michael's Church, in Frank, Seneca, Ohio. [11]

The 1870 Federal Census listed Katherine, her husband Michael, her daughters Mary and Margaret Theresa Velten, her sons Joseph Frank Velten, John Henry Velten, Peter Albert Velten and Jacob William Velten and as living with her parent's, Joseph and Catherine, her brother John Miller and sister Elisabeth Miller on her parent's farm in Reed Township, Seneca, Ohio. [12] [13]

The 1880 Federal Census listed Katherine as living with her husband Michael, her daughters Ida Rose Velten and Katherine Ann Velten, her sons Joseph, John H., Peter A., Jacob W. and Charles David Velten in Reed Township, Seneca, Ohio. [14]

Katherine became Catherine Schwartz's godparent at her baptism on September 2, 1870 in St. Sebastian's Church in Bismarck, Sherman Township, Huron, Ohio. [15]

Katherine is mentioned as a wife in the will of her husband, Michael, signed in Barry County, Missouri, dated March 7, 1894. She received a bequest of her husband's remaining estate after expenses were paid and the children's bequests were distributed. [16]

The marriage ended when Katherine's husband Michael passed away on March 19, 1897.

The 1900 Federal Census listed Katherine as living with her daughter Ida R. Velten in Capps Creek Township, Barry, Missouri. FamilySearch.org - United States Censusd, 1900 - data found under Katalina Velton [17]

The 1910 Federal Census listed Katherine as living with her daughter Ida in Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri. [18] [19]

Katherine made a will, dated December 1915 and signed in Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri. When the will was signed and witnessed, the participants neglected to fill in the actual day of signing. Witnesses were J. K. Saunders and Robert T. Ruschitzka. [20]

Katherine originally named Joseph Weinzirl to be Executor of the will, but his name was crossed out and replaced by the name of her son, Charles D. Velten. Joseph Weinzirl was alive in 1920 and lived until 1924. But since he would have been 72 years old in 1920, perhaps he was infirm or otherwise unable to carry out the job of Executor. [21]

In her will, Katherine listed her living and deceased children: Joseph, Maggie, John, Peter, Charles D., Ida R., Katie and Cora, all alive in 1915; and Mary and Jacob, who died before 1915. Mary and Jacob's living children were also listed. Living children of Mary included: Frank B. Fritz, Leo N. Fritz, Edmond Fritz, Mary Julia Fritz, Melia Fritz, Mary Katherine Fritz, and Lena B. Fritz. Jacob's son John is listed. [22]

The 1920 Federal Census listed Katherine as living with her daughter Ida in Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri. [23] [24]

In a February 20, 1920 newspaper Obituary, it was stated, "Mrs. Catherine Velton Dies - Mrs. Catherine Velton, 83 years old, died Tuesday, February 10, of Bright's disease. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church at Pierce City, Thursday morning, conducted by Rev. Father Berthold. There are eight children surviving, who are J. F. Velton, Joplin; John H. Velton, Douglas, Ariz.; Mrs. C. Shallert, St. Louis; Mrs. C. Stodder, Mapleton, Ia.; P. A. Velton, C. D. Velton, Mrs. M. Koerper and Miss Ida Velton, Pierce City. [25]

Katherine passed away on February 10, 1920 in Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri. She died at her home in Pierce City on Tuesday morning, at 11:30 A.M., at age 83. She had been suffering from Bright's disease, a kidney disorder that may have been linked with diabetes, for over a year. When she died, her eight surviving children, Joseph, John, Catherine, Cora, Peter Albert, Charles David, Margaret and Ida Rose, were with her. [26] Katherine was buried on February 12, 1920 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Pierce City, Lawrence, Missouri. [27] The funeral was held at St. Mary's Church, Pierce City, and the Requiem Mass was conducted by Father Berthold. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery was next to her husband. [28]

Katherine's will was probated May 2, 1920 in Mount Vernon, Lawrence County, Missouri. Since J. K. Saunders, one of the witnesses, died before Katherine, extra steps were needed to prove the will, but it was accepted for probate on February 13, 1920 by Probate Court Judge Scott B. Dayton. On the same date, the Executor of the estate filed an Application for Letters Testamentary or of Administration, listing the value of the Estate to be $7000 personal property and $400 real property. Of more interest was the list of heirs and their place of residence, as follows: [29]
