William Nash was a Private Marine in the 58th (Plymouth Company). He had served in 1784-86 on the Plymouth guard ship Bombay Castle.[1]
William came to Australia as a marine on the "Prince of Wales" ship which formed part of the First Fleet to Australia, arriving at Sydney on 26 January 1788. Maria Haynes accompanied him as his common law wife.
The baptismal record for their son William on 25 May 1788 indicates that Maria fell pregnant to William during the voyage. Baby William died a month/year later on 19 June 1788/9. Baby William was potentially the first European born on Australian soil.[2]
William Nash married Maria Haynes on 13th February 1789 at St Phillips Church, Port Jackson, Sydney.[3][4] Their children were:[5]
William served at Port Jackson in the company of John Shea, Captain of the Marines.[1] On 4 March 1790 Maria and William went to Norfolk Island aboard the ship 'Sirius'. William returned to Port Jackson to enlist in the NSW Corps on 13 April 1792. [6]
By 1802 Maria had left William. William returned to England in 1804.[6]
