Research Notes

Disputed Relationships

The biography previously contained the following unsourced sibling:

Ann was the sister of Daniel Nance, Captain in the North Carolina Militia and Revolutionary Armies of North Carolina. He served as Captain in the expedition of July to October 1776 against the Cherokee Indians, commanded by General Griffith Rutherford.[citation needed]

There is no Daniel listed in the Parish Register as a son of Richard and Mary Nance. There is no Daniel attached as a sibling here. Spratlin-29 22:26, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Digging into this well put together site and finding General Griffith Rutherford and his Captains. There is NO Daniel Nance listed as a Captain under General Griffith Rutherford!

Nance-3009 and Nance-246 appear to represent the same person because: Profiles are largely identical, with each having some additional content. Both either attach or state the parents are the same.

The Biography needs to be corrected. Anne's siblings are listed in the Bristol Parish Register. Anne did not have a brother named Daniel. If there is a source for this sibling relationship, please cite the source or remove the biography information referring to Daniel.

Because Ann is incorrectly stated as "Ann" and not "Anne" as on

the Bristol Parish Register of Henrico, Prince George, and Dinwiddie Counties, Virginia, 1720-1798 Anne D. of Richard & Mary Nances Born Janr 15th 1741-2 & Bapt June 13th 1742.

and is not connected to parents as also stated in birth register and previously attached birth record. Isn't the point to attach families?

A duplicate was created Anne (Nance) Abernathy (1752 - 1795) Nance-3009

Also Anne did NOT have a brother named Daniel; Would love to see who and the source for this Daniel is.

If it is the Daniel Nance III (1744-1802) I have record of being in the Revolutionary, that Daniel was the son of Daniel Nance, II (1707-1784) and Mary Nance (1710-1771), or if it was his father that Daniel Nance, II (1707-1784) was the son of a Daniel, mother Elizabeth

Anne Nance (b. 1741) was the dau. of Richard Nance & Mary Leonard, and is in same birth register as her siblings John, Nathaniel, Leonard, and Eliza

Making Anne and Daniel Nance not siblings.

Although Find A Grave isn't a very reliable resource, it does show that her date of death is 7 Jan 1795, a date that would clear up the Suggestion that she was dead before son Abernathy-325 was born. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/83495808

Also have found birth record on FamilySearch "Virginia Births and Christenings, 1584-1917", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VR5Y-24R : 28 January 2020), Anne Nances, 1742.

The date of birth given on the Family Search record is 15 Jan, 1741. The 1742 date appears to be the Christening date. The FS record does not have an image of the original record and no source is listed in the record so it's reliability is unknown. The Nance Memorial:A History of the Nance Family in General, But More ...... By George Washington Nance also gives Anne's date of birth as 15 Jan, 1741 and cites as the source reference the Bristol Parish record, Prince George, VA. This gives more credence to the 1741 date of birth.

The Find A Grave memorial gives no source for the death date but we could contact the submitter to see if they have something that would support the 1795 date of death. I have contacted the Find A Grave contributor to see if a source is available.
