Biography

Ruby was born in Texas, the daughter of George and Ellen Nance. She married DeWitt T. Bruton before 1920. They had two sons. Ruby died in Los Angeles in 1971. ^[1]

In 1910, the Nance family lived on their rented farm in Granite, Greer, Oklahoma. The household included George N. Nance, 36, born in Illinois (parents b. IL), a farm operator; his wife of seventeen years, Charlie E., 33, born in Texas (parents b. MO), who had had four children; their four children, all born in Texas, Winnie R., 15; Edward E., 12; Ruby M., 7; and Rebecca J., 3. All of the children were in school, except for the youngest one.^[2]

Four Nance students, the children of George N. Nance, were enrolled in school in Granite, Oklahoma in 1918:

Ruby married DeWitt Talmadge Bruton.

In 1920, they lived in their rented house in Lawton, Comanche, Oklahoma. The household included DeWitt T. Bruton, 24, born in Mississippi, a commercial traveler in the tobacco business; his wife Ruby M., 17, born in Texas, and their son, DeWitt J., Jr., eight months old, born in Oklahoma.^[4]

By 1930, Ruby and DeWitt were divorced. In 1930, Ruby and her sons lived with her parents:

In 1930, the Nance family lived on Second Street in Granite, Oklahoma. The household included G.H. Nance, 56, who owned their house, valued at $1000, and also had a radio, a guard in the State Reformatory, not a veteran, who had married at age 19; his wife Charles Ellen, 53, who had married at 15; their two daughters, Georgie Dee Nance, 18, born in Oklahoma; and Ruby (Nance) Bruton, 27, born in Texas, divorced; and her two sons, both born in Oklahoma, Howard, 9; and George, 8.^[5]
